Costa Mesa High senior Nilani Duarte has earned first-team
recognition for a third straight season to highlight 11 Newport-Mesa
players named All-CIF Southern Section in girls soccer.
Duarte, a midfielder, is a first-team pick in Division III, where
she helped lead the Mustangs to a 19-3 record.
Sage Hill School senior goalie Laura Gordon and freshman forward
Kellee Kim are first-team honorees in Division VI, after propelling
the Lightning to a 21-2-1 record and a berth in the CIF Division VI
semifinals.
Newport Harbor High senior sweeper Erin Hardy is a second-team
choice in Division I, while junior defender Phoebe Chang represents
Corona del Mar on the Division II second team.
Costa Mesa senior Jenny Sparks and junior teammate Jasmin Day,
both forwards, are second-team choices in Division III, while Sage
Hill senior Laura Gordon earns second-team accolades in Division VI.
Kelly Morgan, a junior midfielder for CdM, is a third-team pick in
Division II, while Costa Mesa senior goalkeeper Kindra Bailey and
Sage Hill sophomore midfielder Kara Percival are third-team honorees
in their respective divisions.
Duarte, Sparks, Bailey and Day were all standouts on the Mustangs’
2002-03 squad that shared the CIF Division III crown and all have
contributed heavily to the Mustangs’ 36-0 record and three straight
championships in the Golden West League.
Mesa, seeded No. 3, was upset in the CIF Division III
quarterfinals.
Hardy, a four-year varsity star, was a second-team All-CIF
performer as a freshman. She helped the Sailors reach the CIF
Division I playoffs this season. They lost in the first round to
finish 10-5-2.
Laura Gordon garnered second-team All-CIF recognition as a junior.
She anchored a Lightning squad that won three playoff games, the
school’s first in five varsity seasons, after a second-place finish
in the Academy League.
CdM, the Pacific Coast League’s No. 2 playoff representative,
posted a 13-10-1 record and reached the second round of the playoffs.
