Anteaters upset Cal
The UC Irvine women’s water polo team edged out visiting California,
7-6, Sunday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game.
The Anteaters, ranked No. 13 in the country, took a 2-1 lead with
1:49 left in the first quarter on Aleah Amr’s putback goal. Following
a Golden Bear goal to start the second quarter, UCI (10-9, 3-5 in the federation) scored four unanswered goals to close out the half,
including Erica Nicholson’s buzzer-beating lob from 20 meters out to
put the ‘Eaters up 6-2 at intermission.
Cal, ranked No. 6, scored twice to open the third quarter, but
Robyn Kaake scored her third goal of the game for UCI with 1:36 left
in the period to give the Anteaters a 7-4 advantage heading into the
final frame.
Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Machanis preserved the victory as the
Golden Bears, who fall to 11-6 and 3-3, had a power-play opportunity
with 22 seconds remaining and down by one. Machanis finished with 12
saves.
The win is UCI’s first against Cal and the highest ranked opponent
the ‘Eaters have defeated. UCI will play at Cal State Northridge
March 29 at 3 p.m.
Trojans blank UCI
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team lost, 5-0, to USC in the
third and final round of the UCI tournament Sunday.
Trojan third baseman Billy Hart went 3 for 4 with two runs scored
and an RBI while teammate Cyle Hankerd was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
All five runs were charged to Justin Cassel, who struck out six
batters in eight innings of work for UCI (12-11).
Zack Kalter pitched 7 1/3 innings, striking out five while
scattering four hits and Paul Koss struck out two and allowed one hit
to combine for the shutout for USC (13-6).
UCI plays at UNLV March 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Lions extend streak
* SOFTBALL: The Vanguard University softball team extended its
winning streak to eight games after knocking off visiting Whitworth,
3-0 and 2-0, in a nonconference doubleheader Saturday.
Holly Martinez was 4 for 4 on the day with one run scored and one
RBI for Vanguard (12-12).
Jennifer Rynda threw a complete-game three-hit shutout in the
first game and Jenna Willis and Krista Mahan combined for the
three-hit shutout in the second game.

Chandy leads Lightning
* TRACK AND FIELD: The Sage Hill School boys track and field team
finished second in the five-team Academy League preseason meet
Thursday at Saddleback College.
The Lightning accumulated 111 points, behind winner Oxford
Academy’s 116.
Zach Chandy set school records in winning the 100 meters (10.6)
and 300 intermediate hurdles (40.7).
Chandy also anchored the winning 400 relay team (46.6) which also
consisted of Chris Neale, Tyler Ellis and Chris Lee.
Michael Voge was second in the 3,200 in 11:00.7, a school record.
The Sage Hill girls finished fourth out of five teams with 79
points. St. Margaret’s won the meet with 188 points.
Laura Gordon won the long jump (14-feet, 6 3/4 inches) and the
triple jump (34-1) while Amy Werblin won the discus (79-10 1/2 ).
Kelsey Rose set a school record of 12.9 in the 100, fast enough for second place.
Rose was third in the 200 in 27.4.
Gordon and Chandy will compete in the Surf City invitational March
26 at Huntington Beach High.
Sailors split openers
* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor High softball team split its
opening games of the Northwood tournament at Bill Barker Park
Saturday.
The Sailors beat Calvary Chapel from Santa Ana 6-3 in the opening
game. Ashley Gleason went 3 for 5 with two RBI and a home run. Jane
Messersmith scattered three hits over seven innings to win her third
game this season.
Los Alamitos sent the Tars into the consolation bracket with a 3-0
victory in the quarterfinals. Newport was held to two hits by Griffin
pitcher Stacy Nelson.
The Sailors (7-2) have an opportunity to take fifth place in the
tournament if they win two games March 26 at Bill Barker Park.
Comrie, Wratten win
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s Dayne Comrie and John Wratten
claimed victories at the Northridge invitational Saturday.
Comrie placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.91
while teammate Scott Jarvis finished fourth in 53.91. Wratten won the
high jump with a mark of 6-feet, 8 inches and Patrick Grogan placed
fifth in the triple jump at 43-9 1 1/4 .
The Anteaters’ 6,400-meter relay of Tom Whelan, David Santos,
Andrew Garratt and Ricky Barnes was victorious with a time of
17:06.18.
In women’s action, UCI’s 6,400-meter relay of Marie Nguyen, Laura
Olvera, Elaine Gillespie and Melissa Ramos finished second with a
time of 21:00.32. Orlisha Henlon placed second in the high jump at
5-3 3/4 , Amber Nefas was third in the 400 meters (57.63), and
Erricka Williams and Ashlee Marshell finished fourth and fifth in the
long jump with marks of 16-1 1/2 and 16-1, respectively.
UCI hosts the Collegiate Classic on Saturday.
