Sea Kings reach final

The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team won three more matches

Saturday to advance to the Division I final of the Orange County

championships, scheduled Monday at Edison High.

The Sea Kings will face Huntington Beach at 7 p.m.

CdM upset San Clemente, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, 23-25,

25-18, 15-11, in the Sea Kings’ final pool play match at Marina High.

Tom Welch finished with 14 kills while his brother Kevin had 11

with Phil Bannon registering 26 assists in the win.

CdM defeated Foothill, 25-20, 25-17, in the quarterfinals at

Edison with Bannon (25 assists) leading the way.

Senior defensive specialists Shane Collins (six digs) and Ben

Applebee (four digs) helped key the victory.

The Sea Kings dispatched host Edison, 25-14, 25-19, in the

semifinals. Bannon finished with 19 assists and four blocks for CdM,

(14-3).

The Sea Kings will become very familiar with Huntington Beach as

the two teams collide again Tuesday in a nonleague match.

Peirsol places second

* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High product Hayley Peirsol, a

sophomore at Auburn, finished second in the 1,650-yard freestyle at

the NCAA Division I women’s swimming and diving championships

Saturday at Purdue University.

Peirsol’s time of 15 minutes, 52.48 seconds was bettered only by

SMU’s Flavia Rigamonti, whose winning time of 15:46.84 was a pool

record.

Hawaii sophomore Nicole Mackey, a former Newport Harbor standout,

was 42nd in the 200 backstroke (2:01.55) Saturday.

Cal sophomore Sherry Tsai, who starred last season at Orange Coast

College, was 18th in the 100 backstroke Friday (54.75) and 27th in

the 200 backstroke Saturday (1:59.29).

Blue paces Sailors

* TRACK AND FIELD: Junior Whitney Blue finished second in the

invitational 3,200 meters (11 minutes, 4.68 seconds) and had the

third-best time of the day in the girls 1,600 meters to highlight

Newport Harbor High runners at the Meet of Champions distance

invitational Saturday at Azusa Pacific University.

Sailors senior Kenny Rakestraw had the fourth-best time in the

boys 3,200, clocking a personal-record 9:54.99.

Blue’s 5:07.26 clocking in the 1,600 was a season best.

Other top performances from the Sailors’ boys included: Nick St.

Andre (10:27.21 in the 3,200 and 4:38.08 in the 1,600); Martin

Bernard (10:18.01 in the 3,200 and 4:51.76 in the 1,600); Adam

Mayfield (2:07.65 in the 800); and Travis Mayfield (2:08.19 in the

800).

Newport girls standouts included: Megan Randall (2:22.50 in the

800); Courtney Marshall (2:26.31 in the 800 and 5:24.79 in the

1,600); Taylor Bryson (2:28.05 in the 800); Rebecca Turk (1:02.9 in

the 400); Lauren Maddox (5:38.94 in the 1,600); and Melissa Meade

(5:45.97 in the 1,600).

Lancers get revenge

* VOLLEYBALL: A bit of revenge was inflicted as the Orange

Lutheran High boys volleyball team eliminated Estancia, 25-22, 25-19,

from the Division II gold bracket of the Orange County Championships

at Newport Harbor High Saturday.

The Eagles defeated Orange Lutheran in four games to claim the CIF

Southern Section Division III title last May, and Estancia’s boys

basketball team upset the Lancers in the Division III-A quarterfinals

in February.

The Eagles finished second in their pool after a 25-20, 25-18 loss

to Tesoro at Estancia Saturday morning.

Estancia then battled strong but eventually lost to Lakewood,

29-27, 25-20, at Newport Harbor High.

The Eagles (7-6) open Golden West League action against visiting

Ocean View Wednesday at 5 p.m.

UCI an OT winner

* WATER POLO: Host UC Irvine scored the final three goals of

overtime to rally for a 9-7 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

women’s water polo victory over the University of the Pacific

Saturday.

After a pair of goals by UCI freshman Jessica Lewis goals erased a

late deficit and sent the game into overtime, UOP took a 7-6 lead in

the first of two extra periods.

But senior Karly Tivenan pulled the Anteaters (9-9, 2-5 in

conference) even with 49 seconds left in the first overtime.

Freshman Nicole Flacco put the hosts ahead for good with 2:07 left

in the second overtime and freshman Nikki Frish added an insurance

goal with 27 seconds remaining.

UCI sophomore goalie Kelly Woodbury had five saves.

Nevada out-slugs UCI

* BASEBALL: Visiting Nevada pounced on UC Irvine pitching to earn

a 12-7 victory Saturday in the second round of the three-round UCI

tournament.

The Wolfpack (10-8) touched starter Steve Schroer for six runs in

3 2/3 innings, then posted six hits and four runs off reliever

Michael Koehler, who exited after just one inning, to establish a

10-0 cushion.

Matt Anderson was 2 for 5 with two RBIs for the Anteaters (12-10),

who are scheduled to close out the tournament today against USC at 5

p.m.

Leadoff man David Ciarlo was 4 for 5 with six RBIs and No. 2

hitter Brett Hayes was 4 for 5 with five RBIs for the Wolfpack.

Sage edges Estancia

* SWIMMING: The Sage Hill School’s boys swimming team just edged

host Estancia, 83-82, in a nonleague dual meet Friday.

Junior Andrew Fassari was a double winner for Estancia (2-3),

topping the field in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:56.15 and 100

backstroke (1:03.11).

Junior Chad Kunert also won the 50 free (25.05) and the 500 free

(5:24.17) for the Eagles.

The Sage 200 medley relay team won in 2:02.47.

Sailors make progress

* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team won two

of three Division I matches Saturday at the Orange County

championships at Edison and Marina high schools.

The Sailors defeated Capistrano Valley, 25-18, 25-17, to close out pool play at Edison. They finished third in their pool, placing them

into the consolation bracket at Marina, where they opened with a

25-21, 25-17 win over Esperanza.

They bowed out with a semifinal loss to Los Alamitos, 25-22,

25-22.

Coach Dan Glenn was pleased with the play of his team, which for

the first time included 6-foot-6 freshman opposite Kyle Caldwell.

The Sailors (4-7) were paced by senior Brett Perrine, who was

shifted to outside hitter to make way for Caldwell, summoned from the

junior varsity.

Perrine had 13 kills against Capistrano Valley, 10 against

Esperanza and 12 against Los Alamitos.

Caldwell had 19 combined kills, while junior setter Ted Slater

amassed 89 combined assists on the day.

OCC sweep victim

* SOFTBALL: The Orange Coast College softball team fell, 4-2, to

visiting Chemeketa Saturday in a nonconference game.

The Pirates (1-19) took a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Laura Van

Moorleghem in the second inning and an RBI single by Dawn Dallaire in

the third.
