Laguna Outreach’s art workshop today

Laguna Outreach Community Arts “Art Escapes” workshop will be the

third of a three-part ceramic workshop series, “Creativity with

Clay,” taught by artist Sherry Bullard from 1:45 to 4 p.m. today. The

class is suitable for all artistic levels. Cost is $30, including

Sawdust’s ‘Spring into Art’ classes

Sawdust Art Festival’s “Spring Into Art” weekend art workshops

continue Saturday and Sunday.

The fifth annual program of art workshops are for people of all

levels of experience taught by professional Sawdust Art Festival

exhibiting artists.

Workshop prices range from $125 to $250 and include two-day

instruction, all materials, continental breakfast and catered lunch.

Classes are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday. Class size is limited.

Senior art workshops

A new “Art Escapes” has been created for seniors from 9:30 to

11:30 a.m. Fridays at the Women’s Club, 286 St Ann’s Drive. Today’s

workshop is “Paint and Foil a Mug to Go.”

Cost is $7 for those older than 62, including materials. Class

New Outreach art and sea program

Laguna Outreach for Community Arts will offer, “Art and Sea

Adventures: The Art of Tide-Pooling,” in collaboration with the Ocean

Laguna Foundation.

The program includes a morning of tide pool exploration with Ocean

Laguna Foundation docents followed by a hands-on watercolor journal

art workshop taught by Laguna Outreach for Community Arts resource

artists.

Cost is $65 for adults and $35 for kids under 13. Reservations are

‘Art That’s Small

at City Hall’

The Arts Commission is accepting entries for its fourth annual

“Art That’s Small at City Hall” competition from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

March 26 at the council chambers, 505 Forest Ave. The competition is

open to all Orange County residents. Works must be no longer than 12

inches along any edge including the frame and 3 inches in depth. For

‘Color It Orange’

at Laguna College

This year will mark the 31st anniversary of Laguna College of Art

and Design’s “Color It Orange” exhibit, Orange County’s most

extensive art exhibition by youth.

“Color It Orange” is an annual juried youth art exhibition of

countywide schools for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Just Jinger

in concert

Just Jinger, said to be the most successful band in the history of

South Africa according to record sales, will be performing live at

the Woman’s Club, 386 St. Ann’s Drive from 7 to 10 p.m. April 2. The

triple-platinum band toured with U2, Counting Crows and others.

Nelson Mandela invited Just Jinger to perform on March 19, in the

company of Sting and Annie Lennox, to kick off the world HIV/AIDS

concert series.

Two-time Native American Music Award recipient Evren Ozan, 12,

will be a featured guest along with artist/author Nathan Paul Gibbs

-- who will be displaying his ocean related artwork and book.

The event is the first of a concert series to help fund

improvements to The Woman’s Club. Pre-sale tickets are $20, $30 at

Festival’s ‘Art Studio Tour’

Sawdust Art Festival’s 14th annual Art Studio Tour will be from 10

a.m. to 4 p.m. April 9 and 10. The tour gives a glimpse into the

lives of Laguna Beach artists through visits to studios.

One-day tickets are $45; weekend tickets are $75. Tickets include

transportation to the studios, tours and the reception. For

Lynn Epstein’s comedy workshop

Stand-up comic, producer and talent booker Lynn Epstein will be

teaching a Comedy Writing and Performance Workshop from 10 a.m. to 1

p.m. starting April 9 and subsequent Saturdays. Learn how to write

original comedy, perform on stage and get booked. Classes culminate

in a Comedy Night Showcase in Laguna Beach with student’s original

Sculpture competition

The Laguna Beach Arts Commission will hold a sculpture competition

to add to the city’s public art collection. The competition location

is for the Village Green Park at the corner of Monterey Street and

Catalina Avenue. The subject should be inspired by nature, and should

‘Voodoo’ at Ocean Avenue Brewery

Laguna based ZUMA Press is exhibiting “Vivid Voodoo,” by

photojournalist Les Stone, a photographic display of Haiti’s religion

-- rituals, sacrifice, possession and love -- at Ocean Avenue

Brewery, 237 Ocean Ave.

Stone, a ZUMA news photographer, has traveled to Haiti more than

30 times in 10 years. His work captures first-hand Haitian voodoo

ceremonies and practices.

Woman’s Club fourth annual art show

The Woman’s Club of Laguna Beach will hold its fourth annual Women

Artist’s Art Auction, Show and Sale from 3 to 6 p.m. April 17 and 24.

The event showcases the talents of local women artists. Many artistic

media will be exhibited. Each work has been individually crafted and

are original pieces.

Both days will feature a silent auction of the donated artwork to

help provide a venue for the work of new and emerging local women

artists. Attendance is free. Refreshments will be available. The

Woman’s Club, 286 St. Ann’s Drive.

‘Late Nite Catechism’ extended

As a result of continued popular demand, the Laguna Playhouse, 606

Laguna Canyon Road, will extend its run of “Late Nite Catechism”

through June 20, for the 13th time.

The two-act solo performance features “Sister” giving instruction

to a roomful of “students” (the audience.) For information, call

FOA donation

funds honorarium

The City Council unanimously approved a $3,500 donation by the

Festival of Arts for five new banners to add to the city’s

collection. Banners are hung Downtown during the summer months. The

banner program was initiated in 1982 and is an annual art competition

open to local artists. The donation from the Festival of Arts would

provide an artist honorarium of $500 along with materials and

brackets for the banners. It will extend the collection to Laguna

Canyon Road.

The deadline for banner submissions has been extended to March 25.

AIPP lanterns approved

On the recommendation of the arts commission, the City Council

unanimously approved a proposal for two glass and bronze lanterns to

be created by John Barber to satisfy the Art in Public Places

requirement for a property under development at 346 N. Coast Highway.

The lanterns each measure 24-inches high and 18-inches wide. They

will be installed on two pedestals at the entrance of the property.

The proposed installation is in the style of the arts and crafts

movement. The estimated cost of the installation is $11,000.
