Losing library doesn’t
reflect well on society
My opinion on the elimination of the library from the Newport
Coast Community Center is in the form of another question.
What do you think of a society, living in a safe neighborhood, in
the temperate climate of the Southern California coast, that places
the importance of an indoor gym and a theater stage before a library
for a public community center?
No wonder a local high school uses a fictional Hollywood film as
teaching material in a history class as reported in the Daily Pilot.
What are the priorities of our civil institutions?

Nichols fails to represent
the his own constituents
Bernie Svalstad said it publicly to the City Council, “It is
reprehensible.... “
City Council member Dick Nichols once again proved that he
represents his own interests only.
In a 6 to 1 decision (the one being Nichols) the council approved
the Corona del Mar Coast Highway project that has been in the works
for the last five years and is a major facet of the Corona del Mar
vision plan. The scope of this project is the construction of raised
medians on Coast Highway from MacArthur to Poppy and incorporating
new landscaping through the entire village.
This project has strong support of the Corona del Mar Residents
Assn., the Chamber of Commerce, the Business Improvement District
that orchestrated it, and city staff members.
This project will finally bring about major enhancements to one of
the city’s most traveled roadways, will support a safer and more
beautiful walking area and will enhance businesses and residents
alike.
Nichols does not represent his constituency. His actions are
irresponsible to the community he represents. He spoke again that
night of those residents that support his stance yet they have never
come out to voice their opinions and support his claims.
Svalstad publicly asked Nichols to support his constituents and
vote in favor of this project, which he did not.
Nichols, it is time to either get on board with your community or
step down to make room for someone who will.
