UCI’s Nyberg sparkles

UC Irvine sophomore Eric Nyberg won the decathlon with a lifetime
best of 6,410 points at the Northridge multi-event meet Thursday.
UCI’s James Lehigh (6,081) finished third and Trent Richert
(5,739) was sixth for the Anteaters.
Nyberg won individual events with personal bests of 109 feet, 9
inches in the discus, 14-9 1/2 in the pole vault and 181-3 in the
javelin.
Nyberg ran the 1,500 meters in four minutes, 58.37 seconds and the
110 high hurdles in 16.42 seconds.
UCI’s Aaron Lewis was forced to withdraw with an injury.
Fritz Nugent of Redlands (6,336) was second.
Lions win 6th straight
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team won its sixth
straight match, 6-3, over visiting Amherst of Maine Thursday at Costa
Mesa Tennis Center.
No. 1 doubles duo Andreas Guerner and Christoph Schramm won, 8-4,
to give Vanguard (7-1) an early lead. No. 2 singles player Dieter
Weislmaier swept his sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Andreas Reckziegel swept
at No. 4 singles for the Lions.
Coast women perfect
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team remained
unbeaten with a 7-2 nonconference victory over host El Camino
Thursday.
OCC (10-0) took the three doubles points after victories from
Michelle Esquivel and Jessica Rice, 6-2, 6-2, Emily Paulson and
Rachael Sessum, 1-6, 6-3, 10-6, as well as Julie Haley and Ai
Takamori, 6-0, 6-3.
Newport beats Cougars
* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High’s girls swimming team defeated
visiting Capistrano Valley, 109-61, in a nonleague dual meet
Thursday.
Newport swept the 200-yard freestyle, as Anne Belden, Kaley Oka
and Kally Lucas went one-two-three.
The Sailors also swept the 100 butterfly, with Oka, Ashling Taylor
and Belden in the top three spots.
Newport clinched both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays as
well.

6-1, to improve to 12-0 in league this season.
Huy Le swept at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 10-2
in league.
Mesa’s No. 3 doubles team of Ted Lee and Shea Huffman swept to
become 9-0 in league

* SOFTBALL: The Newport Harbor softball team needed only five
innings to claim an 11-0 nonleague win over host Santiago Thursday.
Nine Newport Harbor players scored runs, including catcher
Julianne Bass who was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.
Lauren Talbott was 3 for 3 and also had three RBIs, and Jane
Messersmith was 2 for 2 and had one RBI for the Sailors (4-1).

Eagles foil Lions
* TENNIS: All three singles players swept their sets, along with
the No. 1 doubles unit, as the Estancia High boys tennis team cruised
to a 16-2 Golden West League victory over visiting Westminster
Thursday.
Junior Scott Braunsdorf won, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles
spot, while freshman Bradley Fisher and junior Andy Nelson swept at
the Nos. 2 and 3 singles spots for the Eagles (2-5, 2-1 in league).
The No. 1 doubles team of Chris Alvergue and Cesar Gonzalez also
swept.

* GOLF: Junior Spencer Quinn shot 2-over-par 38 to earn medalist

nonleague victory over visiting Servite Thursday at Big Canyon
Country Club.
Sophomore Andrew Skjonsby shot 40 for the Sailors (4-3), while
Justin Morehead (41), Brandon Sowers (42), Chris Willard (44) and
Davis Pemstein (44) all scored for the victors.
Eagles trim Warriors
* SOFTBALL: The visiting Saddleback Valley Christian High softball
team came within one run of tying it in the seventh inning, but
Estancia escaped victorious, 6-5, in a nonleague game Thursday.
Muriel Mason threw a complete-game five-hitter with one walk and
five strikeouts. Four of Saddleback Valley’s runs were unearned.
Mason also went 2 for 3 at the plate, with two runs scored and an
RBI to help Estancia improve to 5-2.
Hilary Ockey was 2 for 3 and Keile Brown was 2 for 3 with three
RBIs.
Estancia visits Sage Hill at 3 p.m. today.

* SOFTBALL: The Corona del Mar High softball team defeated host
Orange, 4-3, in nonleague play Thursday.
CdM sophomore Holly Van Hiel hit a two-run home run in the third
inning, and winning pitcher Michelle Tolfa gave up four hits.
Tolfa struck out 12 and walked two to up CdM’s record to 4-3.
Orange left 11 runners on base.
Tolfa’s home run in the seventh provided the winning margin.

Junior Michael McDaniels was 1 for 4 at the plate, with a run
scored and an RBI for Estancia, which fell to 0-6 heading into its
Golden West League opener Wednesday against visiting Orange.
Junior Evan Van Geem was 1 for 2 with an RBI, while sophomore Tim
Morley was 2 for 4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.

Texas tops Anteaters
* TENNIS: UC Irvine senior Brian Morton was the lone Anteater to
win in singles and doubles in the hosts’ 5-2 nonconference loss to
Texas Thursday.
Morton, a Corona del Mar High product, defeated Callum Beale, 6-4,
6-4, at No. 1 singles and teamed with Rye Kashiwabara to defeat Beale
and Travis Helgeson, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles.
UCI fell to 9-7 while the No. 12-ranked Longhorns improved to 6-3.
Peirsol finishes eighth
* SWIMMING: Newport Harbor High product Hayley Peirsol finished
eighth in the 500-yard freestyle Thursday at the NCAA Swimming and
Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
Peirsol, a sophomore competing for defending national champion
Auburn, finished in 4 minutes, 44.09 seconds.
UC Irvine freshman Chelsea Nagata finished 65th in the
50-freestyle Thursday.
Nagata, the Big West Conference champion in the 100 butterfly, in
which she has the ninth fastest time in the country this season, will
swim in that event today at the Boilermaker Aquatics Complex.
Eagles falter to Edison
* GOLF: Junior Marcus Sostak shared medalist honors, but the
Estancia High boys golf team fell to visiting Edison, 189-198, in a
nonleague match at the Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club Thursday.
Sostak shot par 35 to lead the Eagles (2-5), while Greg Les (36),
Austin Serr (42), Garrett McMasters (43) and Ryan Gleason (43) also
scored for Estancia.
Estancia opens Golden West League play against Westminster at 3
p.m. Tuesday.
Young advances
* GYMNASTICS: Fourth-grade Eastbluff Elementary student Adam
Young, of Newport Beach, qualified for the regional boys gymnastics
competition, scheduled for April 7-10 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds,
following a ninth-place all-around finish at the California state
junior olympics Sunday at UCLA.
Young placed third in the floor exercise and fourth on the vault
in the 9-year-old Southern California division. He is a member of the
U.S. Gymnastics Training Center in Aliso Viejo.
‘Eaters tame Tigers
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team defeated
visiting Princeton, 9-3, Tuesday night in a nonconference match at
Anteater Aquatics Complex.
The ‘Eaters (8-9) took over in the third period, scoring five
goals and holding the Tigers to none. Christine McDonald, Jessica
Lewis, Nicole Frish, Robyn Kaake and Nicole Flacco all finished with
goals for UCI.
