Serious accidents plague intersection
Two separate traffic accidents, one resulting in the death of a
bicyclist and the other leaving a pedestrian with serious head
injuries, both occurred in similar locations near the intersection of
Atlanta Avenue and Delaware Street, one day a apart, police said.
Charles Richard Hughes, 79, of Huntington Beach, was crossing
Atlanta on a bicycle east of Delaware when he was hit by a car at
5:48 p.m. Monday, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene,
police said.
Constance Springer, 59, of Huntington Beach, was driving the 1994
white Ford Thunderbird that hit Hughes, police said. Springer was
arrested on drug possession charges unrelated to the accident, police
said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, police
said.
In a separate incident on Sunday night, a car struck a pedestrian
in a similar location, police said.
Les Johnson, 23, of Huntington Beach was hit in the roadway by a
vehicle driven by Adahm Wareh, 70, of Huntington Beach, police said.
Johnson was hospitalized with head injuries at UCI Medical Center
where he remains in critical condition, police said.
Wareh was not arrested and was not injured in the accident, police
said.
