UCI wins tournament

UC Irvine’s women’s golf team had four players in the top 10 to help
capture the third annual Anteater invitational at Coto de Caza Golf
Club on Wednesday.
The Anteaters led from start to finish, posting a three-round
total of 905 (295-308-302) to claim the team title. UCI also won the
title in 2003. It is the second tournament win of the year for UCI
after also winning the Nittany Lion invitational in October.
The Anteaters finished eight shots ahead of Boise State, which
shot 913 (306-305-302). Colorado State was third at 924, while
Colorado was fourth at 943 and Long Beach State was fifth at 946.
UCI placed four golfers in the top 10, led by sophomore Angela
Won, who was second at 221 (74-74-73). Freshman Selanee Henderson was
third at 224 (71-79-74). Freshman Jane Chin was seventh (229) and
sophomore Minnie Choi had her best showing of the year at ninth with
a score of 231 (78-76-77).
Lions win opener
* BASKETBALL: The top-seeded Vanguard University women’s
basketball team placed three players in double figures as it advanced
in the first round of the NAIA Division I tournament with a 79-44
victory over Edward Waters in Jackson, Tenn., Wednesday.
Kelly Schmidt led the Lions (31-3) with a game-high 29 points,
while Lisa Faulkner set a new NAIA tournament record with 17 assists,
topping the previous record of 16.
Rachel Besse added 22 points and Lacey Burns chipped in 15 points.
Vanguard plays in the second round at 6:15 p.m. Friday.

Welch flexes muscles
* VOLLEYBALL: The Corona del Mar High boys volleyball team
overcame a loss in the third game to beat host Irvine, 25-21, 25-18,
14-25, 25-15 in a nonleague match Wednesday.
CdM (9-3) senior Kevin Welch had 16 kills, while twin brother Tom
Welch had seven. Junior Scott Slaughter joined in with nine kills and
seven blocks and Ted Slaughter finished with four kills and six
blocks. Sophomore Phil Bannan led in assists with 34.
Mustangs sweep
* VOLLEYBALL: Despite the defensive pressure Westminster brought,
it was visiting Costa Mesa which ended with a 25-20, 25-20, 26-24
victory in its Golden West League opener Wednesday.
Mustangs junior Ryan Bagwell had 15 kills, while junior Mitch
Caldwell had 11 with only one error. Junior Andrew Melcer finished
with 35 assists.
Sea Kings victorious
* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High boys golf team came out on top in
a 198-236 nonleague victory over Laguna Beach at the Aliso Viejo Golf
Club on Wednesday.
Senior Zach Rabinovich had one birdie and one bogey and shot an
even par-36, while David Su (37), Ben Tilsen (38), Jaime Bloom (41),
and Matt Story (46) combined to advance the Sea Kings to 4-2 overall
and 1-0 in league.
Eagles down Orange
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team walked away
from its Golden West League opener with a victory over visiting
Orange Wednesday, 25-15, 25-14, 25-14.
The effort was led by Estancia juniors Scott Markley with 11 kills
and Dallas Kopp, who had nine. Senior setter Trevor Holmes pitched in
with 24 assists and four aces. Estancia is 5-3 overall.
Mesa tops Valley
* SOFTBALL: Costa Mesa High’s softball team scored four runs in
the fourth inning and defeated host Santa Ana Valley, 8-2, in a
nonleague game Wednesday.
Senior Brittany McAleer was 2 for 3 with a two-run home run, her
third homer of the season. Senior Danielle Morton was 2 for 4 with
one RBI and a double, while Janae Rivera was 1 for 2 with an RBI for
the Mustangs (4-3).
Junior starting pitcher Jackie Butler threw seven innings with
five strikeouts and two walks. Mesa visits Sage Hill at 3:15 p.m.
Tuesday.

Dent withdraws
* TENNIS: Former Corona del Mar High tennis player Taylor Dent
withdrew after one set from the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells,
Calif., with a stomach virus Wednesday. He was playing 14th-seeded
Guillermo Canas of Argentina in a round of 16.
Dent, who played his freshman year for the Sea Kings in 1996,
upset fourth-seeded Marat Safin of Russia, the Australian Open
champion, 1-6, 7-6 (1), 6-2, in the round of 32 on Tuesday.
Lehigh, Nyberg in 2nd
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s men’s track and field members James
Lehigh and Eric Nyberg are in second and third place, respectively,
after the first five events of the decathlon at the Northridge
Multi-Event meet Wednesday. The final five events will be contested
today.
Lehigh had the best mark in the field in the high jump at 1.93
meters (6-foot-4) for 740 points. Nyberg topped the field in the long
jump at 6.55 meters (21-6) for 709 points and Lewis was first in the
shot put at 12.11 meters (39-8 3/4) for 613 points.
Shea sparks Sailors
* SURFING: The National Scholastic Surfing Association held its
annual state championship series last weekend at Church Beach, San
Clemente. Newport Harbor High entered its top 12 short boarders, top
two long boarders and top two girls.
Daniel Shea was first in the first and second rounds and third and
fourth in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. Stevie
Farmer, Brian Doheny, Chrstian Morabito, Joey Head, JJ Frei, Mark
Kidman, Reagan Riley, Joe Riggio, Artemus Gregurak, Evan Hochwald and
Taylor Lobdell all competed for Newport.
Devon Falasco placed third and sixth in the quarters and semis,
respectively, for the girls. Chris LoMenzo and Tanner Prairie
finished fifth and sixth in the boys long board. Former Newport
students Amy Lowry (now at UC Santa Cruz) and Joe Alani (UC Santa
Barbara) competed in the college division.
CdM suffers 1st loss
* TRACK AND FIELD: The Corona del Mar High girls track and field
team suffered its first loss of the season, a 69-58 defeat by Dana
Hills in nonleague action Wednesday.
The 1,600-meter runners pulled through for CdM (4-1), as Hilary
May (5:10.3), Allison Damon (5:14.8) and Annie St. Geme (5:18.1) went
1-2-3. Tiffany Liu won the long jump (16 feet, 1 inch) and triple
jump (33-7).
The CdM boys lost, 104-23, and dropped to 0-5. Kenneth Wong placed
third in the 3,200 in 10:08.5.

Doubles doom UCI
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team lost to Denver, 4-3,
in a nonconference match Wednesday afternoon at Anteater Tennis
Stadium.
The Pioneers won two of the three doubles matches to claim the
doubles point. Senior Hui Leow and freshman Becky Bernhard defeated
Barbara Kourim and Jenny Trettin, 8-1, in the No. 2 match for UCI’s
lone doubles victory.
Mesa edged, 9-8
* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa High baseball team had a 8-3 lead
entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but host Laguna Beach pulled
out five runs in the inning and one in the sixth to pull away with a
9-8 victory in a nonleague game Wednesday.
Laguna Beach (4-2) nailed a three-run home run in the fifth inning
to tie it at 8.
Senior Jeff Waldron was 3 for 4 for the Mustangs (5-2) with and
RBI and two runs scored, while senior Ryan Szwast was 2 for 4 with
two runs scored. Senior Alex Pisarski was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Estancia falls
* GOLF: Despite two co-medalists from Estancia High’s boys golf
team, the Eagles lost to Oak Park, 406-418, in a nonleague match
Wednesday at Sterling Hills Country Club.
Juniors Marcus Sastak and Gregory Les both shot 76 on the par-81
course to earn co-medalist honors, while Ryan Gleason (86), Garrett
McMasters (88) and Ben Schramm (91) all scored for Estancia (2-4).
