Presson wins it
Senior Wess Presson hit a game-ending three-run home run in the
bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Corona del Mar High baseball
team past visiting Newport Harbor, 5-3, in a nonleague Battle of the
Bay matchup Tuesday.
Senior Andy Frenkiel and sophomore Jake Lemmerman both drew walks
for the Sea Kings (3-2) in the bottom of the seventh, and Presson
stepped up to the plate and smacked the walk-off homer with two outs
on the board.
Presson finished the day 3 for 4 from the plate, with the home run
and five RBIs. Sea Kings’ junior pitcher Matt Hauser threw just the
seventh inning and received the win.
The Sailors (2-3), who were aided with five CdM errors, have lost
two straight in the same fashion. Western hit a game-ending home run
in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday in the Newport Elks
tournament to hand Newport a 6-5 loss.
Newport was led Tuesday by senior Patrick Keehan, who was 2 for 4
with two doubles, while junior Chris Thompson drove in one RBI. Tars’
starting pitcher Drew Harris threw five innings, allowing three runs
on four hits.
Newport and CdM both open league play at 3:15 p.m. Friday against
Aliso Viejo and Northwood.
