The CIF Southern Section Division I fourth-ranked Corona del Mar High
boys tennis team defeated visiting sixth-ranked Peninsula, 11-7,
playing without regular No. 1 singles star Wesley Miller, in a
nonleague match Tuesday.
Miller is playing in a tournament in Alabama all week and won’t be
available for the Sea Kings, who visit Sage Hill Thursday and Newport
Harbor Friday.
Freshman Fabian Mathews swept hist sets Tuesday, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0,
playing at No. 3 singles, and senior Spencer Reitz swept his sets at
No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
UC Irvine in first
* GOLF: UC Irvine leads after the first two rounds of the Anteater
Women’s Golf Invitational at the Coto de Caza Golf Club in Coto de
Caza Tuesday.
The Anteaters shot a two-round total of 603 (295-308) to sit in
first, eight shots ahead of Boise State who totaled a 611 (306-305).
Colorado State is third with a 617 (304-313), while Colorado is
fourth at 630 (322-308) and Long Beach State is fifth with a score of
632 (315-317).
The tournament concludes with 18 holes today.
Mesa boys triumph
* GOLF: Costa Mesa High’s boys golf team earned a 232-273 victory
over visiting Fairmont Prep in a nonleague contest Tuesday at Mesa
Linda Golf and Country Club.
Senior Robert Angle shot 43 to earn medalist honors for the
Mustangs (3-5), while Troy Wright (45), Garrick Vohs (47), Jorge
Sandoval (46) and Joey Freeman all scored on the par-35 course.
Mesa plays Calvary Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday at San Joaquin Golf
Club.
Tars bounce back
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Brett Perrine had a match-high 17 kills to
lead the visiting Newport Harbor High boys volleyball team past
Laguna Beach, 18-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-14, after dropping the first
game of the nonleague match Tuesday.
Perrine also had six blocks and two service aces, while senior
Sean Woods added nine kills and six digs. Junior Parker Stevens had
three blocks and sophomore Weston Dunlap had six kills and three
blocks for the Sailors (3-4), who open play in the Orange County
Championships at 3 p.m. Friday at Edison High.
Eagles handle Laguna
* SOFTBALL: Estancia High’s softball team had no trouble getting
by host Laguna Beach in a 12-1 nonleague victory Tuesday.
Muriel Mason pitched seven innings for the Eagles (4-3) with nine
strikeouts and no walks, while also going 4 for 4 from the plate with
two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Allison Wyman was 3 for 5 with
three runs scored, three RBIs and a home run, her fourth of the
season.
Beck’s bat helps Bucs
* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team exploded for
nine runs in the sixth inning Tuesday to defeat host Golden West 11-2
in an Orange Empire Conference game.
OCC, which improves to 11-7 and 5-1 in conference, sent 14 batters
to the plate in the sixth, which was started off with four straight
base hits, including a 2 RBI double by sophomore Luke Beck.
Beck, who added a solo home run in the eighth, was a single away
from hitting for the cycle.
The Pirates, who move into a tie for first place with Cypress,
plays host to Santa Ana Thursday at 2 p.m.
Mesa doubles shine
* TENNIS: John Dang and partner Brian Nguyen improved to 9-0 in
Golden West League matches this season while Ted Lee and Shea Huffman
also remained undefeated as the Costa Mesa High boys tennis team
downed Saddleback, 13-5, Tuesday afternoon.
Mesa (3-1, 3-0 in league) won eight of nine doubles sets with Ted
Lee and Shea Huffman improving to 6-0 in league matches.
Daniel Gomez claimed two of three singles sets to lead the
Mustangs.
Eagles get on board
* TENNIS: Junior Scott Braunsdorf didn’t lose a game in sweeping
all three singles sets in helping the host Estancia High boys tennis
team tally its first win this season following a 17-1 Golden West League triumph over Ocean View Tuesday.
Freshman Bradley Fisher, like Braunsdorf, improved to 5-1 overall
this season with three victories while the Eagles (1-5, 1-1 in
league) claimed all nine doubles sets.
Chase Raymond and David Do, along with the duos of Cesar Gonzalez
and Chris Alvergue, and Shane Thompson and Josh Ross contributed to
the doubles victories against Ocean View (0-2 in league).
Gleason leads Newport
* SOFTBALL: Senior Ashley Gleason pitched seven innings, striking
out 12 and allowing two hits and no walks to lead the visiting
Newport Harbor High softball team to a 5-2 nonleague victory over
Tustin Tuesday.
Sophomore Betsy Martin was 2 for 3 from the plate for the Sailors
(5-1), with a double, a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Sophomore Casey Lucas was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
OCC sweeps Cypress
* TENNIS: The Orange Coast College women’s tennis team didn’t lose
a single set en route to a 9-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over
visiting Cypress Tuesday.
At No. 1 singles, Michelle Esquivel swept her sets, 6-0, 6-0, for
the Pirates (9-0, 6-0 in the OEC), while Jssica Rice, Emily Paulson,
Julie Hayley, Ai Takamori and Rachael Sessum all won their sets.
OCC visits El Camino at 2 p.m. Thursday in a nonconference match.
Monarchs top Sage
* GOLF: Sage Hill School’s boys golf team lost to visiting Mater
Dei, 187-219, in a nonleague match Tuesday at Strawberry Farms Golf
Club.
G. Foster shot 32 to earn medalist laurels for Mater Dei (6-0),
while junior Josh Chen shot 41 to lead the Lightning (3-2). Ryan
Babbash (43), Geoffrey Grant (44), Will Rigby (44) and Rory Foubister
(47) all scored for Sage.
OCC flies by Cypress
* TENNIS: Colby Morita didn’t give up a game playing at No. 1
singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Orange Coast College men’s
tennis team past host Cypress, 9-0, in an Orange Empire Conference
match Tuesday.
Spencer Soloman, Jared Hayley, Hiroshi Muto, Victor Jacobs and
Scott Fielder all won their singles sets for OCC (8-2, 6-2 in the
OEC), while all three doubles teams also won. OCC plays host to
College of the Desert at 2 p.m. Thursday.
Anteaters lose late
* BASEBALL: Pepperdine University’s baseball team scored twice in
the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat visiting UC Irvine, 3-2,
Tuesday in a nonconference game. The Anteaters fall to 11-9 while the
Waves improved to 12-8.
The Anteaters held a 2-1 lead after seven, but were unable to
extend the lead, leaving junior Jaime Martinez stranded following a
two-out double in the top of the eighth.
In the bottom of the eighth with one out, Pepperdine centerfielder
Adrian Ortiz drew a walk to start the rally. Second baseman David
Uribes’ gap triple off reliever Blair Erickson scored Ortiz and tied
the game at 2. Catcher Chad Tracy followed with a single to drive in
the eventual game-winner.
Sailors fall to Servite
* GOLF: Senior Davis Pemstein shot a one-under-par 34 with three
birdies to win medalist honors, but the visiting Newport Harbor High
boys golf team lost to Servite, 201-207, in a nonleague match Tuesday
at Western Hills Country Club.
Justin Morehead shot 42 for the Sailors (3-3), while Brandon
Sowers (43), Chris Willard (44), Andrew Skjonsby (44), Rhett Palmer
(44) and Spencer Quinn (45) all scored.
Bolsa defeats Eagles
* BASEBALL: The visiting Estancia High baseball team lost to Bolsa
Grande, 11-6, in a nonleague game Tuesday.
Sophomore Tim Morley led the Eagles (0-5), batting 3 for 4 with
two runs scored and an RBI. Junior Kane Curran and senior Juan
Chaires both drove in two RBIs for Estancia, while sophomore Blake
Pinto was 1 for 2 with one RBI.
Sage loses fourth
* VOLLEYBALL: Sage Hill’s boys volleyball team lost its fourth of
the season in as many contests with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 sweep by
visiting Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana in a nonleague match Tuesday.
