Anteaters defeat Trojans
UC Irvine Steve Schroer pitched seven strong innings to earn his
second win in three days as the Anteaters topped host USC, 8-2,
Sunday in the finale of the Public Storage/USC baseball classic.
Schroer, who pitched three innings to get the win Friday over
Texas Tech, improved to 3-2 by holding the Trojans at bay. He was
named Most Valuable Pitcher in the tournament after allowing just two
earned runs and nine hits in 10 tournament innings.
Sophomore Blair Erickson worked the final two innings for his
fourth save.
Cody Cipriano had a two-run homer as part of a 10-hit attack for
the Anteaters, who improve to 11-8.
Taylor records double
* TRACK AND FIELD: Newport Harbor High junior Bo Taylor won the
shot put and discus at the Irvine track and field invitational
Saturday at Irvine High.
Taylor heaved the shot 53 feet and hurled the discus 163-0 to
highlight the Sailors’ boys participants.
Senior Trevor Theriot was third in the shot put (49-5), while Kurt
Kalanz was sixth in the discus (136-0) for the Tars.
Senior Nick St. Andre was eighth in the 1,600 meters (4:35.8) and
the 800 (2:04.3), both personal records.
Junior Kenny Rakestraw was eighth in the 3,200 in 9:58.0.
The Sailors’ boys and girls teams open their Sea View League
season Thursday at 3 p.m. at Foothill
UCI’s Whelan second
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s Tom Whelan finished second in the
800 meters with a time of one minute, 52.97 seconds at the Ben Brown
track and field invitational at Cal State Fullerton Saturday.
Anteater David Santos was fourth in the 800 in 1:54.83.
Matt Grilli (sixth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 9:44.26) and Ricky
Barnes (seventh in the 5,000 in 14:37.98) rounded out UCI’s top men’s
finishers.
In women’s competition, UCI’s Marie Nguyen (fifth in the 5,000 in
17:17.80), Melissa Ramos (seventh in the 1,500 in 4:48.19), and
Elaine Gillespie (eighth in the 1,500 in 4:51.16) stood out.
UCI gets polo split
* WATER POLO: The UC Irvine women’s water polo team defeated
Indiana, 6-2, after falling to Arizona State, 5-3, at Arizona State
Saturday.
Robyn Kaake and Aleah Amr each had two goals in the victory over
Indiana, which helped No. 13-ranked UCI improve to 7-9.
