Sea Kings rule the pool

Newport-Mesa residents can debate the merits of Corona del Mar and

Newport Harbor in athletics all they want, but one thing is clear.

But when it comes to girls’ water polo, the Sea Kings rule the pool.

Corona del Mar’s 9-5 victory over Laguna Beach in the CIF Southern

Section Division II championship marked the fourth consecutive title

for the Sea Kings, their third in Division II. As far as we’re

concerned, that qualifies as a dynasty.

It should also be a point of pride for Corona del Mar faithful,

who’ve endured years of comparisons -- usually negatively -- with

that other water polo power in town. Forget the arguments about the

quality of Division I teams versus Division II teams. Four straight

championships is one tough achievement. No one can dispute that.

Much of the credit goes to Coach Aaron Chaney, who’s only won four

Southern Section titles in his four years at the helm of the Sea

Kings. But in the end, the loudest cheers should go to the players,

who’ve made it happen year after year.
