Corona del Mar High junior Ben Maggard personified mound efficiency
Saturday, throwing just 63 pitches in a complete-game shutout to key
a 5-0 victory in a consolation game of the Newport Elks tournament
Saturday at CdM.
Maggard threw 47 strikes and started 21of 30 hitters off with a
strike in a game Sea Kings Coach John Emme said lasted only 80
minutes.
Maggard’s mastery helped extend the team’s shutout streak to 14
innings and Corona del Mar hurlers have allowed just one run in 24
innings, heading into Tuesday’s nonleague Battle of the Bay showdown
with visiting Newport Harbor.
Jake Lemmerman singled in a run to open the scoring and Andy
Frenkiel drove in two more with a single to stake Maggard to a 3-0
lead in the third.
R.J. Duernberger and Tyler Ray had RBI singles in the fourth for
the Sea Kings (3-2).
Lemmerman, Duernberger and Mitch Folks all went 2 for 3 for the
