Hahn gains entry into Toshiba

Newport Beach Country Club head golf professional Paul Hahn will get
his second crack at the Toshiba Senior Classic after securing one of
five sponsor’s exemptions into the 11th annual PGA Champions Tour
event, which begins with Friday’s first round.
Tournament Director Jeff Purser called Hahn at 7 a.m. Friday with
the news.
“I have to make sure I don’t hook it into the bushes on the first
hole,” said Hahn, 51, referring to his Toshiba debut last year. “I am
aiming right on one.”
Hahn joins 25 of the top 30 players from the 2004 Champions Tour
money list entered into the 78-player field that includes two-time
Toshiba champion Hale Irwin, Gil Morgan, Bruce Fleisher, Larry Nelson
and Mark McNulty, D.A. Weibring, Jim Thorpe and 2000 Toshiba winner
Allen Doyle, among others.
Two-time U.S. Open champion Curtis Strange makes his Toshiba debut
this year while past major championship winners Raymond Floyd and Tom
Watson will also compete in the tournament.
The ever-popular Chi Chi Rodriguez, who has not played any
Champions Tour events this year, refused a sponsor’s exemption into
Toshiba and will not play the event for the first time.
Tournament week begins with Monday’s pro-am followed by Tuesday’s
Champions Breakfast and the two-day pro am beginning Wednesday.
Hahn said he will attend the Champions Breakfast and likely play
in either the Wednesday or Thursday pro-ams while mixing in time on
the range and putting green.
“I’m going to take it easy and have more fun,” Hahn said. “Last
year I was caught up in the moment, watching other players and not
concentrating on what I was doing. I tried to cram for the test.”
