* SOFTBALL: Chaffey College handed the Orange Coast softball team
its eighth straight defeat Monday with an 8-5 decision in a
nonconference game.
OCC (1-13) took a 1-0 first-inning lead when leadoff hitter
Ashleigh Miller was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on
Heather Walker’s single up the middle.
The Panthers, who improve to 6-6, tied it in the third and took a
3-1 lead in the fourth on an RBI single and a wild pitch.
The Pirates battled back in the fourth when Miller reached base
and advanced to second on a Chaffey error. After stealing third,
Miller scored on a double to the left-center gap by Laura Van
Moorlegham, OCC’s starting pitcher who struck out three batters in
seven innings of work.
Chaffey scored widened the lead on a two-run home run in the fifth
and scored twice in the sixth on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly.
OCC was able to put up three runs in the sixth. Van Moorleghem
drove in two with a bases-loaded single and a double steal brought
Walker across the plate to cut Chaffey’s lead to 7-5.
Trailing, 8-5, in its final at-bat, Miller gave OCC hope with a
one-out triple. But Chaffey recorded the final two outs without her
