Wrestlers head for state
Six prep wrestlers worked their way through a tough and tenacious
weekend at the CIF Masters Meet at Fountain Valley High to earn a
trip to the CIF State Tournament beginning Friday.
Edison qualified four and Marina advanced one to the CIF State
tournament, which runs Friday and Saturday, also at Fountain Valley
High.
In addition, Huntington Beach resident Bryan Osuna, a student at
Calvary Chapel in Santa Ana, qualified by winning his weight class
(125).
He was one of three Eagles to win their weight class as Calvary
Chapel led the county in State qualifiers with five.
Advancing to the CIF State tournament for Sunset League and CIF
Coastal Division champion Edison are junior Dylan Jensen (130, eighth
place), senior Jimmy Hynes (160, fifth place), senior Jake Pinham
(189, eighth place) and junior Romney Fuga (heavyweight, fifth
place).
Marina junior Michael Koehnlein finished in sixth-place at 119 to
advance.
In CIF girls’ basketball, the season came to an end for Marina,
Edison and Huntington Beach.
Sunset League co-champion Marina, the No. 6 seed in the Division
I-A playoffs, dropped a 47-35 quarterfinal loss to visiting Ventura,
the No. 4 seed.
Rachael Maulit scored six points to lead the Lady Vikings, who
ended their year 22-7.
Marina defeated Ontario (57-39) and Pacific View champion Oxnard
(61-55) in the postseason en route to a quarterfinal round
appearance.
Maulit scored 13 points and Erin Barney led Marina with 18 points
in the win over Oxnard.
Edison, the third-place team from the Sunset League, had its
season come to an end in a 57-38 Division II-AA quarterfinal loss to
Sunbelt League winner and No. 3 seed Perris.
The Chargers, the No. 6 seed, earned a berth in the quarterfinal
round by disposing of La Quinta (Desert Valley No. 2) La Quinta,
38-30, and Dos Pueblos (Channel No. 3), 43-37.
Rebecca Kepilino scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds for Edison
in the win over Dos Pueblos.
Huntington Beach, an at-large entry from the Sunset League, ran
into a buzz saw in Hesperia, which rolled to its 28th victory without
a loss in a 75-39 second-round victory.
The Mojave River champions were the division’s No. 4 seed.
Huntington had advanced to the second round by defeating Pioneer
League co-champion North Torrance in overtime on the road, 73-70.
In CIF girls’ soccer, Edison was eliminated from Division I title
contention by Baseline League runner-up Upland, which scored a 2-0
victory in quarterfinal round play.
A day earlier, Edison and Mira Costa played to a scoreless tie
that went four overtime periods, but the Chargers advanced on penalty
kicks at Orange Coast College.
The first two overtime sessions were 10 minutes each; the final
two were five minutes each.
In the penalty kicks phase of the match, Edison’s first four
kickers, juniors Elyse Kirmaci, Kaitlin Thulin, Carley Prendergast,
and sophomore Corie McGuire, each found the net.
When Mira Costa’s fourth kicker was wide on her attempt, it opened
the door for Edison senior Nicole “Maile” Lawrence to deliver the
winning shot.
Edison was the No. 2 entry from the Sunset League.
