Special Olympics Winter begins

Eighteen Orange County athletes -- including eight from Huntington

Beach -- will be at Big Bear Mountain March 7to 9 to compete at the

2005 Special Olympics Southern California Winter Games.

Nearly 150 Special Olympics athletes will compete in four winter

sports, including alpine skiing, cross county skiing, snowboarding

and snowshoeing.

Of the Special Olympics Orange County members, 11 of the 18

athletes will be competing in alpine skiing events and the other

seven will compete in cross country events.

In the alpine ski category, Surf City athletes include Lianne

Daily, 31; Jennifer Gibson, 25; Heather Lougherty, 24; Scott McCall,

22; Evan Moffett, 23, and Alin Silcock, 10.

Surf City athletes competing in cross-country include Dennis

Louie, 35, and Jenny Skinner, 33.

Athletes will begin arriving on Monday morning for time trials

throughout the day. The Games will officially begin Monday evening at

7 p.m. with an outdoor opening ceremony, held on the Big Bear

Mountain Lodge deck.

Opening ceremony highlights include the lighting of the Special

Olympics Torch and a fireworks display signifying the official start

of the Games.

Competition begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday and continues through 2 p.m.

Wednesday. An awards ceremony will follow the completion of the

games.

Oilers to hold celebration

The Huntington Beach High athletic department will host its

“Centennial Celebration of Athletics at Huntington Beach High School”

during a June 10 fundraising event.

The festivities will take place between 6 p.m. and midnight at the

Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort.

A donation of $75 per person includes dinner and dancing, a slide

show, raffle and silent auction.

Invitation to the event is extended to anyone who has participated

or contributed to the school’s athletic history in any form, current

and former athletes, Girls Athletic Assn. Members, booster club

members, supporters and donors.

Event organizers are is seeking names, addresses and phone numbers

of anyone interested in attending. They are also seeking old

photographs, trophies, plaques and any other memorabilia for display.

All donations are tax deductible and all proceeds from the event

go directly to the school athletic department.
