Navy Airman Brandon G. Roldan, a 2001 graduate of Costa Mesa High

School, recently participated in New Horizons, a humanitarian

assistance exercise in Haiti, while assigned to the amphibious

assault ship Saipan, based in Norfolk, Va.

Roldan and his shipmates offloaded 1,200 tons of construction

equipment and supplies for U.S. Navy Seabees and U.S. Army Reserve

Military Police, in support of the 90-day exercise. New Horizons will

support the rebuilding of schools and wells and will also provide

medical support to the victims of Hurricane Jeanne. Elements of the

Saipan Expeditionary Strike Group will also conduct maritime

interdiction operations training and multi-national exercises with

Marines from Honduras and Columbia.

Roldan joined the Navy in August 2001.

Brenda Bailey of Costa Mesa, a biology major in the College of

Arts and Sciences at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn., has

made the dean’s list for the fall semester. In order to receive this

honor, a student must achieve a 3.6 grade-point average, based on a

4.0 scale.

Marissa Richards of Costa Mesa has been hired as a business

development associate for Orange County for Staples Inc. She will

implement sales strategy and develop business contacts through

targeted prospecting of mid-sized and large accounts. She has a

bachelor’s degree from San Diego State University.

The fourth- and fifth-graders of Costa Mesa Girl Scout Troop 767

recently held their Camping and Me Day Camp, an event in which they

shared their well-honed camping techniques with younger Daisy and

Brownie Girl Scouts (ages 4 to 8).

They taught their young charges to pitch tents, roll up sleeping

bags, wash dishes at a campsite, and most importantly, follow fire

and outdoor safety rules. They also taught the fledgling campers how

to tie knots, check for weather conditions and safeguard their

environment.

The event was part of Troop 767’s efforts to earn the Girl Scout

Bronze Award, the highest award Junior Girl Scouts can earn. Girls

have to demonstrate the leadership and planning skills necessary to

follow through on a project that makes a positive impact on their

community.
