Here are some items the Planning Commission considered Monday.

HYLAND HOME FURNISHINGS CENTER

The Planning Commission approved rezoning a 21-acre property to

build a massive retail complex featuring furniture and housewares

stores. The South Coast Home Furnishings Center will be built on

Hyland Avenue between South Coast Drive and Sunflower Avenue.

The 312,540-square-foot facility will replace a former State Farm

Insurance office building that has been vacant since 2004. Furniture

manufacturers’ showrooms will anchor the development, which will also

include home decor stores, office supply vendors and other retail

uses.

WHAT IT MEANS

Birtcher Development, of Laguna Niguel, must still get the City

Council’s approval for the rezoning.

BERNARD STREET CONDOMINIUMS

An apartment complex that includes 12 units will be converted to

condominiums. The development of two-bedroom apartments was built in

1959.

WHAT IT MEANS

To meet requirements of the conversion, the owner of the

apartments will improve the property in various ways, such as

expanding parking and adding private yard areas for tenants. The sale

of the condominiums will offer city residents more chances for home

ownership, though current tenants will have the first right of

refusal.
