Big West singles out Biggins
UC Irvine senior Ashley Biggins became the first Anteater women’s
basketball player this season to be named Big West Conference Player
of the Week.
The 6-foot-4 center led UCI to back-to-back victories over Idaho
(Thursday) and Utah State (Saturday), averaging 19 points and 7.5
rebounds, while shooting 87.5% from the field in the two games.
She had a career-high 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds against
Idaho, then collected 18 points (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field),
and pulled down seven rebounds against Utah State.
Sage hosts semifinal
* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School girls soccer team (21-1-1) will
play host to top-seeded Arrowhead Christian in a CIF Southern Section
Division VI semifinal today at 3 p.m.
Coach Amy Ray’s unseeded Lightning, runner-up to St. Margaret’s in
the Academy League, have outscored three playoff foes, 8-2, using
seven different goal scorers.
Only freshman Claire Josephson has more than one playoff goal for
Sage, which rallied to top Desert Christian, 2-1, in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Freshman Kellee Kim leads the Lightning with 30 goals, followed by
Josephson and senior Amy Werblin (12 each).
Kara Percival leads Sage in assists.
Arrowhead Christian (21-1-1), has outscored three playoff
victims,10-1, including a 2-1 quarterfinal triumph over Windward.
Today’s winner will meet either St. Margaret’s (17-2-2) or Bishop
Union (16-2-1) in the title game Saturday. The championship game’s
time and site will be determined after the semifinals.
Lions remain perfect
* TENNIS: The Vanguard University men’s tennis team cruised to a
9-0 victory over visiting Green Mountain College, an NCAA Division
III school from Vermont, Monday afternoon in a nonconference
encounter.
The Lions (9-0), ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, did not have any
singles player lose more than three games.
Dieter Weislmair and William Storm each won, 6-0, 6-0, while
Cryril Conty beat his opponent, 6-0, 6-1.
Vanguard returns to Golden State Athletic Conference action
Thursday when it visits Westmont College in Santa Barbara at 2 p.m.
Hornets handle OCC
* SOFTBALL: Kim Ensey and LeeAnne Frutschy each had one hit and
one RBI for host Orange Coast College in a 14-3 Orange Empire
Conference loss to Fullerton Monday.
Fullerton led, 6-0, before the Pirates (1-10, 0-3 in conference)
scored twice. The Hornets (8-1, 2-0) then scored eight in the fifth.
OCC scored answered with a run, but the game ended after five
innings.
