CdM falls in OT

The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team lost, 2-1, in sudden death

overtime to Chaparrall at Great Oak High in the first round of the

CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs Saturday.

Despite the heavy rain, the synthetic field remained in good

condition, Coach Pat Callaghan said.

The Pumas scored on a deflection off a free kick in the second

minute of the second half to take a 1-0 lead.

CdM evened up the score when sophomore Allan Hardison collected

Grant Almquist’s free kick and beat the goalkeeper in the 71st

minute. Neither team could score in two 10-minute overtime periods,

but Chaparrall tapped in a mishandled ball in the 5th minute of

sudden death for the win.

The Sea Kings, who finished 12-7-3, are graduating 12 seniors but

will return six starters next year.

UCI tames UCSB

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team defeated UC Santa

Barbara, 4-2, Saturday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The

teams played the singles matches to start the match that was delayed

two hours due to inclement weather earlier in the day, while doubles

matches were not played.

Freshman Inna Agababian gave UCI (4-3) a 1-0 lead as she won, 6-3,

6-2, in the No. 4 match. Senior Anna Bentzer won, 6-1, 6-4, against

Marielle Gruenig in the No. 1 slot to give UCI a 2-0 lead. Senior Hui

Leow put the ‘Eaters up, 3-0, with her, 6-4, 6-3, win in the No. 5

match. Sophomore Jayme Hu clinched the victory with her 6-4, 7-6 win

in the No. 6 match.

Stanford tops Anteaters

* VOLLEYBALL: Stanford hit .422 as a team and defeated UC Irvine,

30-21, 30-23, 31-29, Saturday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation

conference match at Crawford Court. The Cardinal improve to 5-8

overall (4-6 in the MPSF) while the Anteaters dropped to 6-10 overall

and 4-7 in conference play.

UC Irvine was paced by Steffin Rangel, who had nine kills. Dave

Smith and Jayson Jablonsky had eight and seven kills, respectively.

Paul Spittle, who played one game as the team’s libero, led the

Anteaters with six digs before moving back to the outside in game

three. Setter Brian Thornton recorded 31 assists for the team while

Jon Steller had a pair of service aces to lead all players.

Anteaters crumble

* BASKETBALL: After taking a 32-31 halftime lead, the UC Irvine

women’s basketball team lost to UC Davis, 81-71, in a nonconference

game Saturday in Northern California.

Angie Ned led the Anteaters (4-19) with 24 points on 10-for-18

shooting, while Ashley Biggins chipped in 12 points. UCI shot 40.3%

from the field, while Davis shot 46.6%.

Kimberly Smith led Davis (8-16) with 24 points and Ellen Porshneva

added 17.

Charcas finishes 4-2

* WRESTLING: Newport Harbor High junior Eddie Charcas pinned his

first opponent but lost on points to his second to finish one match

shy of placing in the top six in the 119-pound weight class at the

CIF Inland Division finals.

Charcas finished the tournament 4-2 with four pins.

VU is cracked

* BASEBALL: The visiting Vanguard University baseball team gave up

eight runs in the first two innings and went on to lose to Point

Loma, 17-6, in Golden State Athletic Conference play Saturday in San

Diego.

John Engers was 4 for 5 hitting for Point Loma (8-1, 2-0 in the

GSAC), with a double and a home run. Four different players went deep

for Point Loma. Two players hit homeruns for Vanguard (3-6, 0-2).

LBSU trumps UCI

* WATER POLO: The host UC Irvine women’s water polo team lost,

11-7, to No. 5 Long Beach State Saturday in an Mountain Pacific

Sports Federation match.

Sophomore Robyn Kaake scored the first of her three goals with 49

seconds left in the first half on a penalty shot to tie the game,

3-3. Alison Braden scored with 28 seconds left in the half to give

the 49ers a 4-3 lead at halftime. Long Beach State would score the

next two goals to take a 6-3 lead. The Anteaters would cut the lead

down to two goals with 5:26 left on a Jessica Lewis shot, but would

get no closer than within two.
