Sage makes history

The Sage Hill School girls soccer team used four different goal
scorers to claim its first postseason victory in the program’s
five-year history with a 4-0 triumph over visiting Connelly in a CIF
Southern Section Division VI first-round game Friday afternoon.
The Lightning (19-1-1) will go on the road to visit Pomona
Catholic (15-11), a 2-0 victor over Calvary Chapel of Murrieta, at 3
p.m. in Tuesday’s second round.
Sage went up, 2-0, in the first 12 minutes as Emily Webb and
freshman Kirby Anderson, called up from the junior varsity team last
week, tallied goals.
Sophomore Kara Percival made it 3-0 in the 35th minute with an
unassisted goal and freshman Kellee Kim capped the scoring in the
72nd minute off an assist from Webb.
Freshman Claire Josephson posted two assists while senior
goalkeeper Laura Gordon made one save in what Lightning Coach Amy Ray
called the team’s best game of the season.
Ray praised the defense of Grace Graham and said Sage’s passing
was at its best.
Mesa wins first
* The Costa Mesa High girls soccer team scored two goals in two
minutes of the second half and pulled away from visiting Orange
Lutheran to win, 3-1, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section
Division III playoffs Friday at Orange Coast College.
Sharon Frazier scored in the 68th minute and Jenny Sparks scored
in the 69th minute for the three-time defendin Golden West League
champion Mustangs (18-2) to break a 1-1 game. Cyndi Mendoza scored in
the 11th minute for the Mustangs, who outshot Lutheran, 17-6.
Kindra Bailey finished with five saves for Mesa. Lutheran finished
its season 11-5-5.
CdM goes OT to win
* Corona del Mar High’s girls soccer team needed 80 minutes of
regulation, another 40 minutes of overtime and a penalty-kick session
before turning away host Villa Park in a CIF Southern Section
Division II first-round playoff game Friday afternoon.
The Sea Kings (13-9-1) defeated the Spartans, 4-2, on penalty
kicks after the teams finished regulation tied at 1. Neither team
scored during two, 10-minute overtime sessions followed by 20 minutes
of sudden death.
CdM hosts Arcadia, a 2-0 winner over Riverside Poly, in the second
round at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Sea King sophomore Alex Tobiessen chipped the ball in from 18
yards out to even the game at 1 in the 79th minute after Villa Park
(15-5-3) scored first in the 15th minute.
Taylor Fallon, Jessica Mazura, Vanessa Fallon and Kelly Morgan all
scored penalty kicks.
CdM, which fell to El Dorado in overtime of their CIF first-round
game a year ago, scored three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead in
the penalty-kick session. The Spartans made it 3-2 before Morgan
sealed the game with her goal.
Katie Schiesser made 10 saves while senior teammate Jessica
Gianotti headed out two shots heading toward the Sea King goal in
overtime, CdM Coach Bryan Middleton said.
Sailors end season
* The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team closed out its season
with a 3-2 loss at Capistrano Valley in the first round of the CIF
Southern Section Division I playoffs Friday afternoon. Newport
finished 10-5-2.
Both teams went into halftime tied, 1-1, but Capo (12-4-5) came
out firing in the second half. Capo scored first in the second half,
but Crystal Wright equalized it, 2-2, in the 60th minute with a goal.
Capo then scored in the 70th minute to win the game.
