Members of a large group of 50-plus orca, also known as killer,
whales frolic Monday afternoon in the ocean off of South Laguna
Beach, which excited local marine biologists. The animals, called
“offshore orcas,” are believed to eat mostly large fish and squid,
not sea mammals. The offshore orcas travel in groups great distances
and resemble large, black dolphins. The orcas are deep-sea divers,
feeding on sea life at depths of 500 feet or more. They may have been
attracted to the area by giant squid -- dozens of which have washed
up on local beaches over the past month -- that live at depths of
1,000 feet.
