Anteaters upset Gauchos

The No. 18 UC Irvine women’s water polo team (3-2, 1-0) upset No. 9
UC Santa Barbara 8-7 Saturday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation match in Santa Barbara.
The Anteaters stormed out the gates to take a 4-0 lead after the
first period with two goals from sophomore Robyn Kaake and a goal
each from freshman Jessica Lewis and senior Erica Nicholson. The
Gauchos fought back as they cut the UCI lead to 5-4 at halftime.
The Gauchos outscored UCI 3-0 to start the second half taking a
7-5 lead. UCI scored two goals to tie the game at 7-7 with a 1:34
left. An ejection on a UCSB player led to a player advantage with 23
seconds remaining on the clock. Jessica Lewis capitalized on the
opportunity as she scored with three seconds left to give UCI the 8-7
victory.
UCI will open their home schedule Feb. 19 at noon at the Anteater
Aquatics Complex against No. 5 Long Beach State in an MPSF match.

UCI sweeps Riverside
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team (3-4) swept UC Riverside
7-0 on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.
The Anteaters swept the three doubles matches to clinch the
doubles point. Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara defeated Mark
Contreras and Christian Frick 8-5 in the No. 1 match.
In singles, Morton and Kashiwabara quickly put UCI up 3-0 as
Morton defeated Justin Montgomery 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 match while
Kashiwabara defeated Joe Cartledge 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 match.
Sophomore Mustafa Ulukan clinched the victory in the No. 5 match as
he defeated Jordan Leo 6-2, 7-5. Victor Lamm, Peter Surapol and Olof
Sjolund all won their matches to complete the sweep for the ‘Eaters.
UCI takes a break until Feb. 25 when the team heads to the East
Coast to take on the Furman Paladins at 10 a.m. PST in Greenville,
S.C. The Anteaters will also face No. 4 Georgia and No. 29 Clemson on
the road trip.
3 ‘Eaters tie for first
* TRACK AND FIELD: UC Irvine’s Kimberly Harper, Orlisha Henlon and
Danielle St. John tied for first place in the high jump with marks of
5-feet, 5 3/4-inches in the indoor track and field competition at
Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff, Ariz., Saturday.
UCI’s 1,600-meter relay of Amber Nefas, Henlon, Suzanne Purmort
and Theresa Condon was also victorious with a time of 3:53.85.
Purmort finished second in the 800-meters with a time of 2:24.99.
The Anteaters compete at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation
Championships in Seattle Feb. 25-26.
CdM loses on road
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team ended
the regular season with an 8-7 loss at Montebello Saturday night.
Jordan Anae registered four goals to lead CdM (20-7).
The Sea Kings, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II,
traditionally play Montebello, No. 4 in Division I, in the regular
season finale.
Seedings for the playoffs are announced Monday.

Lions fall in overtime
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard University men’s basketball team
battled back from a 16-point deficit to force overtime, but the Lions
lost to visiting The Master’s, 82-81, in a Golden State Athletic
Conference game.
Brian Kim hit a three pointer with 41 seconds remaining to tie the
game for Vanguard (9-15, 4-10 in conference). Kim’s jumper in
overtime gave Vanguard an 81-80 lead with 38 seconds left, but The
Master’s Caleb Adcock scored on an offensive rebound with nine
seconds left for the victory.
UCI falters in overtime
* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team lost 81-72 in
overtime to UC Riverside Saturday night at the Student Recreation
Center in Riverside in a Big West Conference game.
The Anteaters (4-17, 3-10 in conference) led the game 66-64 with
the clock ticking down at the end of regulation when UCR was awarded
a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left on the clock. The
Highlanders converted both of the free throws to tie the game at
66-66 and send the game into overtime. UCR outscored UCI 15-6 in the
overtime period.
Lauren Yadon led the ‘Eaters with 20 points. Hayley Tull added 15
and Melissa Jacob contributed 11 points.
