Man pleads guilty
to bilking investors
A Newport Beach stockbroker pleaded guilty Friday to charges that
he bilked investors out of about $3 million.
Richard O’Leary, 56, entered his plea in federal court in Santa
Ana and is scheduled for sentencing July 25, according to a U.S.
Department of Justice spokesman.
Operating at several different brokerages since 1993, O’Leary
promised clients he would double their money but used it for himself
and his family, giving forged financial statements to investors,
according to a press release.
He faces up to 15 years in federal prison.
Driver surrenders after hit-and-run
A hit-and-run accident in Costa Mesa early Friday morning left two
people hospitalized and a car lodged against a home.
A 1995 Cadillac driven by 23-year-old Eric Edward Amos of Costa
Mesa was headed south on Elden Avenue when it hit a Volkswagen
turning left onto Wilson Street, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver
said.
The force sent the Cadillac into a parked car and then into the
wall of a home on Wilson Street, Carver said. The Volkswagen also hit
a parked car and the front fence of another home, he said.
Costa Mesa resident Taylor Sullivan, 18, and an unnamed passenger
were trapped in their car and had to be cut out of it, he said. They
were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with moderate
injuries, Carver said.
Amos fled the scene in his car but later turned himself in to
police, Carver said. Amos was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
Police arrest two on suspicion of arson
Costa Mesa police arrested two men on suspicion of arson and
vandalism after they allegedly set a telephone line box on fire near
Costa Mesa High School Thursday morning.
Police initially received a call of a disturbance at 1 a.m. in the
2800 block of Fairview Road, Sgt. Marty Carver said. There they found
two men walking away from a telephone utility box on fire.
Police arrested Costa Mesa residents Michael Levi, 21, and Colin
McGuire, 19, on suspicion of arson and vandalism, Carver said. The
two are being held at the Costa Mesa city jail.
Local phone service was affected while repairs were being made,
Carver said.
