Sobriety checkpoint slated for Saturday
Costa Mesa police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint on Newport
Boulevard Saturday night.
The checkpoint will run from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Newport Boulevard
near Flower Street.
Officers will stop cars randomly to interview drivers. Those who
seem impaired will be removed from their cars for further
investigation.
Costa Mesa periodically conducts the checkpoints to raise
awareness of the issue of drunken driving as well as to stop those
driving under the influence.
Half of the fatal car crashes in Costa Mesa last year were
alcohol-related, police said.
A mobile display from Mothers Against Drunk Driving will be placed
at the scene, showing a car that was involved in a fatal,
alcohol-related accident.
The program is funded by a grant through the California Office of
Traffic Safety.
