Eagles, Mesa boast league champs

Costa Mesa High senior Joe Amburgey and Estancia senior Alex

Sotomayor each won their respective weight classes at the Golden West

League wrestling championships Thursday at Santa Ana High.

Amburgey won by decision, 6-4, over an opponent from Santa Ana to

claim the 171-pound class while Sotomayor (160) won by injury

default.

Sotomayor was one of four Eagles to place among the top three,

which qualified them for the CIF Southern Section divisional

championships Feb. 18-19 at Westminster High, with his performance

Thursday. Sophomore Gabe Thaler (152) and junior Dominic Durastanti

(275) each placed second while junior Danny Alderete (130) took third

for Estancia.

Amburgey, a league champion for the first time, was the only

Mustang to qualify for CIF.

Efren Alvarez (189) and Chris Guzman (215), both from Estancia,

along with Mesa’s Garrett Williams (114), are alternates for CIF.

Mustangs down Eagles

* SOCCER: In what was described as an impressive game by 13-year

coach Dan Johnston, the Costa Mesa High girls soccer team defeated

Estancia, 7-0, in the final Golden West League game for both teams on

Thursday.

The Mustangs, who improved to 36-0 in three seasons in the league,

including three straight titles, started the game out with a strong

passing game, scoring in the first five minutes of play. At the end

of the half the Mustangs (17-2, 12-0 in league) were up, 5-0.

Five Mustangs contributed to the shutout including Jenny Sparks,

Cyndi Mendoza, Sharon Fraizer, and two by Jasmin Day and Nilani

Duarte. Sparks and Duarte also had two assists. Kindra Bailey had six

saves.

CdM finishes fourth

* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High, Tesoro and Northwood girls

basketball teams all played out a three-way tie for third place in

the Pacific Coast League Thursday at Laguna Beach High, a site deemed

neutral by the three athletic directors from each school.

Corona del Mar defeated Northwood, 45-38, in the first game, but

lost to Tesoro, 76-60, in the second game, as the Titans clinched the

final league playoff spot in CIF Southern Section Division III-A. CdM

(14-14, 5-5 in league) petitioned for an at-large berth with more

than 11 season wins, but it won’t be confirmed until Sunday if the

Sea Kings qualified for the playoffs.

Tesoro won a coin flip to play second, after CdM and Northwood

hashed it out. The Sea Kings had to play a double-header, and ended

up losing the second game due in part to fatigue, Coach Scott Kahawai

said.

Mesa to raise funds

* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High chapter of the National Honors

Society will be selling raffle tickets for a signed Karl Malone

basketball before tonight’s boys basketball game against Estancia.

Each raffle ticket will cost $1 and 75% of the proceeds will be

going toward tsunami relief in Asia and East Africa. The raffle will

be drawn at halftime of tonight’s game, which is scheduled to start

at 7 p.m. at Costa Mesa High.

Sage blanks Wildcats

* SOCCER: Freshman Kellee Kim scored all three goal as the

visiting Sage Hill School girls soccer team wrapped up Academy League

play with a 3-0 victory over Whitney Thursday.

Sage Hill (18-1-1, 8-1-1 in league), ranked seventh in CIF

Southern Section Division VI, began the day a game behind

league-leading St. Margaret’s, but secured at least second with the

victory, Lightning Coach Amy Ray said. The Tartans faced Capistrano

Valley Christian Thursday.

Sophomore midfielder Kara Percival assisted two of Kim’s goals --

her other score game on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box,

Ray said.

The Lightning, who led, 2-0, at halftime, outshot Whitney, 15-2.

The Wildcats dropped to 8-7-2, 4-6.

CIF playoff pairings will be announced Monday.

Seniors spark Sage

* BASKETBALL: Five seniors started on senior night to help host

Sage Hill School earn a 59-50 Academy League boys basketball win over

Whitney Thursday night.

Senior Matt Loper scored 18 points, while senior Jordan Ogron hit

two three-pointers and seniors Alex Samel and Stephen Hancock

provided energy and toughness, Lightning Coach Steve Keith said.

Freshman Jamie McGee had a team-high 21 points off the bench for

Sage (16-7, 3-7 in league). The Lightning wind up fourth in league,

but should gain an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section

Division IV-A playoffs when pairings are announced Sunday.
