PTA Coffee Break Feb. 16 on teen behavior

The next PTA Coffee Break, “What’s really going on inside your

teenager’s head?,” will be at 8:15 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Surf and

Sand Hotel, 1555 S. Coast Highway.

It will focus on how teens think; the ten commandments of

parenting; the top three ways to earn your teen’s respect; drugs and

sex and dating. Cost is $5.

‘Patriots Day’ student cover art and essay winners

The 39th Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade Assn. announced the

winners of its student program contests at the annual parade honorees

brunch Feb. 6. at Tivoli Terrace.

Laguna Beach High School senior Elliot Whalen, a student in Peter

Tiner’s art class, won the cover art contest. Elliot will

receive a $100 U.S. savings bond from Citizens Business Bank.

Chris Reed, a sixth-grade student in Gaye Pivaroff’s Language Arts

class at Thurston Middle School, won the essay contest. He will

receive a $100 from Bank of America. For information, go to https://

Laguna high school senior Sean DeGarmo wins award

Laguna Beach High School senior Sean DeGarmo was recognized as an

Outstanding Pre-Trial Attorney at the 2004 Mock Trials Competition.

High schools from Orange County competed in the 24th annual

competition. Sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation and

the Orange County Bar Assn., the national competition involves more

than 10,000 students and volunteers.

Laguna Beach High School team was headed by Teacher/Coach Peter

Gomez and included: Alana Braun, DeGarmo, Ryan Fair, Trevor Freemond,

Randy Hellman, Kendra Kent, Erik Seyster, Cecilia Doreng-Stearns,

Christina Mestre, Ryan Morre, Adam Turbi and Brittany Ziolkowski.

Laguna finished with two wins and two losses.

El Morro School seeking ‘Jog-a-thon’ aid

The El Morro Elementary School PTA is seeking business sponsorship

and community donations for its annual Jog-a-than fundraiser March

18. Donations will support PTA funded educational programs, including

Math Challenge, Class Act, Art Masters, Colonial Days and Science on

the Go. All sponsorship donations will receive public recognition.

Help for Hope Concert by Laguna teens

Laguna teen bands are performing in concert to raise money for

cancer research at the City of Hope from 4 to 6 p.m. March 13 at the

Festival of Arts’ Forum Theater, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

The teens were motivated to raise money for cancer research,

having several friends and relatives with cancer who received help

from City of Hope. Refreshments will be available. For tickets,

St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School happenings

St. Catherine’s congratulates its eight-grade boys’ basketball

team for its undefeated regular season 10-0 record. The team is

headed to the Beach League/Parochial Athletic League playoffs on

Saturday.

Team players are: Christian Alvarez, Ryan Cullinane, Tyler DeTrue,

Adam Flati, Daniel Glenn, Morgan Lewis, Peter McGinn, Kyle Morris,

Ryan Nelson, Dane Pavlik, Thomas Pryor, Isaiah Real, Kyle Snyder and

Andy Zettler. Coaches are Tom Pavlik, Ted Alvarez and Ed Esguerra.

The school wishes the team good luck.

LBUSD offers adult education

Laguna Beach Unified School District is offering adult education

programs. “English as a Second Language,” meets from 5:30 to 8:30

p.m. Monday to Friday through June 23. This class is free and meets

at Manzanita Park, room 90, across the street from Laguna Beach High

School.

“Adult Education Alternative Learning” is an independent study

course that meets once a week from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday to

Friday at Laguna Beach High School, room 23, 625 Park Ave. The class

offers academic requirements for high school and adult diploma,
