Title suits Estancia

After battling to an 11-0 Golden West League record following a 81-31
victory over host Santa Ana High Wednesday, the Estancia boys
basketball team clinched first place in league for the first time
since the 1996-’97 season.
Junior Michael McDaniels had a career-high 25 points, 21 coming in
the first half. Senior Carlos Pinto had 20 points and junior Dallas
Kopp had 16 points and 16 rebounds, eight boards on the offensive
end.
Estancia outscored Santa Ana, 51-21, by halftime on its way to
sealing a playoff berth in CIF Southern Section Division III. Santa
Ana dropped to 2-9 in league.
If the Eagles win at Costa Mesa Friday at 7 p.m., it would be the
first time Estancia has gone undefeated in league since the 1994-1995
season.

Sailors cruise to 2nd
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team
outscored Woodbridge, 24-4, in the first quarter and went on to
defeat the visiting Warriors, 65-50, Wednesday to clinch second place
in the Sea View League and advance to the CIF Southern Section
playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.
The Sailors (16-9, 8-2 in league) will begin the Division II-A
playoffs next week. Aliso Niguel clinched first in league.
Senior Brett Perrine had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds for
a double-double to lead Newport, while senior Taylor Young also had a
double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Alex Orth had
nine points, five assists, five steals and five rebounds.

Sailors win Sea View
* WATER POLO: Junior Kally Lucas scored three goals while senior
Anne Belden added two to lead the Newport Harbor High girls water
polo team to its second straight Sea View League championship
following a 9-3 triumph over host Woodbridge Wednesday.
Melissa Wheeler, Leah Robertson, along with usual goalkeepers
Kendal Nelson and Elizabeth Layton, all scored one goal each while
Lucas tallied two assists and Belden finished with a team-high three
steals for Newport (24-2, 5-0 in league).
Ashling Taylor, Newport’s usual two-meter standout, made 10 saves
in goal while Nelson made three.

Mesa holds Orange
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys basketball team held Orange
to less than 40 points in a 64-34 victory at home in a Golden West
league game Wednesday.
The Mustangs (16-9, 9-2 in league) kept the Panthers to
single-digit scoring in every quarter except the fourth. Costa Mesa
led by 10 at the beginning of the second quarter and 14 going into
the third. The Mustangs secured their victory by scoring 29 points in
the third quarter.

CdM clinches second
* SOCCER: One goal was all it took and the visiting Corona del Mar
High boys soccer team defeated Laguna Beach, 1-0, to clinch second
place in the Pacific Coast League Wednesday.
Sophomore Allan Hardison scored in the 56th minute after a Shane
Collins free kick was tipped into the middle by senior Brandon
Barrett, and the Sea Kings (12-6-3, 7-2-1 in league) advanced to the
CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.
Mustangs rout rival
* WATER POLO: Senior Sarah Bowman racked up five goals in two
quarters and the Costa Mesa High girls water polo team defeated
cross-town rival and host Estancia, 13-1, in a Golden West League
game Wednesday.
Mesa (19-9, 5-1 in league) clinched second place in league behind
Orange and will advance to the CIF Southern Section Division VI
playoffs beginning next week.
Bowman scored three goals in the first quarter and two in the
second, while Chandra Malapira, Carley Millian and Annie Le added two
goals apiece. Freshman Meagan Kunert scored in the fourth quarter to
tally Estancia’s lone goal.

to visiting Riverside, 72-69, in an Orange Empire Conference game
Wednesday.
Reggie Brown had a team-high 16 points for the Pirates (13-11, 4-7
in the OEC), while Matt Davis added 14 points. Riverside’s Shamont
Brown had a game-high 22 points.

Sea Kings fall short
* BASKETBALL: With the season on the line, the Corona del Mar High
boys basketball team came up short to host Laguna Beach, 54-49, in a
Pacific Coast League game that would have sent the Sea Kings into a
three-way tie for third in league with a win and a likely chance to
advance to the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs.
CdM (9-16, 4-6 in league) led by as many as three points in the
fourth quarter but couldn’t get a shot to drop on five consecutive
possessions after that.
Junior Ryan Lance had a team-high 15 points to lead the Sea Kings,
while Scott Slaughter chipped in 14 points. Brett Hirata had 10
points, including two three-pointers, playing in has last game for
CdM.
Slaughter, Lance, Stefan Kaluz and Adam Smith will all return next
year to lead the team.

UCI wins in five
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team needed five
games to defeat UC San Diego, 30-23, 28-30, 27-30, 30-26, 15-9, in a
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Crawford Court Wednesday.
The 10th-ranked Anteaters improved to 5-8, 3-5 in the MPSF, while
UCSD is 0-9, 0-8.
Jayson Jablonsky led UCI with 15 kills, while Aaron Harrell put
away 13 kills and hit .647. Junior Brian Thornton had 57 set assists
to go with nine digs. Paul Spittle led UCI with 11 digs.
UC San Diego was led by Adam Toren with 20 kills and six digs.
Coast women fall
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s basketball team
fell, 79-71, to visiting Riverside College in a nonconference game
Wednesday night.
The Pirates (15-11, 5-6 in league) shot 31% from the field in the
first half but maintained a 32-29 lead at halftime. In the second
half Riverside (21-4, 9-2 in league) outscored OCC by 14 points,
holding the Pirates to seven points.
Guard Crystal McCormick led the scoring with 23 points and forward
Rhondi Naff added 15 points and 10 rebounds. OCC’s Lauren Stepanski,
Valerie Katayama and Riverside’s Denise Snyder fouled out.
Tigers tame Pirates
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team lost
to visiting Riverside, 72-69, in an Orange Empire Conference game
Wednesday.

‘Eaters swing cut short
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team lost to No. 24
Pepperdine, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis
Center in Malibu.
The Waves swept the three doubles matches to claim the doubles
point. The ‘Eaters (2-4) got on the board with Peter Surapol
defeating Ivor Lourak 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 4 singles match. Mustafa
Ulukan got the match to 3-2 with his 7-5, 6-4 win over Kevin
Borzenski in the No. 6 match.
Vanguard suffer upset
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard women’s basketball team remains in
first place after a 69-64 loss to host Point Loma Nazarene in a
Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday night.
Kelly Schmidt scored a season-high 25 points and added five
assists and five rebounds for the Lions.
Lion women fall
* TENNIS: The Vanguard women’s tennis team dominated in doubles
and singles play, shutting out host California Baptist, 9-0, in a
nonconference victory on Wednesday.
The Lions (2-0) lost only two games in doubles. Vanguard’s No. 2
doubles team of Mallory Bailey and Ramona Repede, along with the No.
3 team of Olivia Armstad and Alena Votavova, swept the Lady Lancers,
7-0.
In singles, Olga Hlushchanka and Jenny Edner each won 6-0 in
straight sets.
Vanguard falters at end
* BASKETBALL: The Vanguard men’s basketball team defeated host
Point Loma in a 71-67 in a Golden State Athletic Conference victory
on Tuesday night.
Freshman Brian Roberts, who hit 4 of 6 three-pointers, led the
Lions (9-14) with 18 points and six rebounds.
Vanguard returns to host The Master’s College Saturday night at
7:30.
