Dent on Davis Cup squad
Corona del Mar High product Taylor Dent has joined the United States
Davis Cup team that will face Croatia in a World Group match March
4-6 at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
Dent will join teammates Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick and the
doubles team of former Newport Beach Breakers Bob and Mike Bryan,
ranked No. 2 in the world.
It’s the second Davis Cup appearance for Dent, 23. He played for
America in a 4-1 loss to Croatia in the first round of the 2003
competition in Zagreb, Croatia.
Dent, ranked No. 33 on the ATP Tour, lost to Mario Ancic, 7-6,
3-6, 7-6, in his only Davis Cup match.
Garcia lifts Estancia
* SOCCER: Roberto Garcia’s penalty kick in the second overtime
gave the Estancia High boys soccer team a 2-1 win over visiting Santa
Ana Monday in a Golden West League clash.
The win moved the Eagles to 6-3-2 in league, ahead of Santa Ana,
which fell to 5-3-3. Estancia is in second place while the Saints
fall to third.
Santa Ana took a 1-0 lead 45 seconds into the second half, but the
Eagles fought back.
Danny Perez controlled a corner kick and deposited the ball into
the upper right corner to tie the game with three minutes left for
Estancia.
Rafael Hernandez was tripped inside the 18-yard box in the second
10-minute overtime, to set up Garcia’s winning penalty kick.
Estancia’s final regular-season match is Wednesday against Costa
Mesa at 3 p.m. at Orange Coast College.
UCI’s Wagner honored
* BASEBALL: UC Irvine junior catcher Mark Wagner, who went 6 for
14 with two homer runs and five RBIs to help the Anteaters win 2 of 3
from Cal over the weekend, has been named Big West Conference Player
of the Week in baseball.
In the series opener Friday, Wagner opened the scoring with a solo
home run to spark UCI’s 10-1 win.
Saturday, he scored the go-ahead run after delivering a two-out
double, but Cal prevailed, 5-4, in 11 innings.
Sunday, Wagner extended a 4-3 lead with a two-run homer in an
eventual 7-3 win.
Wagner scored four runs and is slugging .929.
Local runners shine
* RUNNING: Costa Mesa resident Laura Knight won the women’s half
marathon, while Estancia High and Orange Coast College product Johann
Appell won the men’s 5K Sunday at the Pacific Shoreline Marathon in
Huntington Beach.
Knight finished the 13.1-mile course in one hour, 25 minutes, 22
seconds, 95 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Appell finished in 15:18.
Humberto Rojas, also a former standout at Estancia and OCC, was
third in the men’s half marathon (1:13.36), while Christine Appell,
who also ran at Estancia, was fourth in the women’s 5K (18:46).
Badorek sets future
* FOOTBALL: Newport Harbor High product Chris Badorek, a starting
offensive lineman at Santa Ana College the last two seasons, will
continue his career at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Mo.
Badorek, a 6-foot-4, 337-pounder, joins the NAIA school that won
the Heart of America Athletic Conference last season and finished
11-1.
