Dredging boat runs aground in Newport
A 167-foot dredging boat that ran aground Sunday morning remained
on the shoreline of West Newport Monday morning.
The Eland, taking part in a dredging operation near the shore, ran
aground on the beach at about 8 a.m. Sunday near 68th Street, said
Jennifer Schulz, a spokeswoman for the Newport Beach Fire Department.
The boat’s engineer unsuccessfully attempted to move the boat
Monday morning at high tide under the ship’s own power, Schulz said.
He will try again today at high tide, 8:17 a.m., with the help of a
tugboat, she said.
Rollover accident injures one seriously
A crash on Newport Boulevard in Costa Mesa Monday left at least
one person seriously injured.
A Chevrolet Suburban was traveling south on Newport Boulevard at
3:02 p.m. when it struck a car going west on Industrial Way, Costa
Mesa Police Lt. Dale Birney said. Both vehicles rolled over in the
crash, police said.
The westbound car had at least four people in it, Birney said.
One was seriously injured and taken to Western Medical Center in
Santa Ana, he said.
Police had not identified the victim late Monday.
