Lions cruise to win

The NAIA top-ranked Vanguard women’s basketball team remained in

first place of the Golden State Athletic Conference following an

86-56 GSAC win over Concordia Saturday at The Pit.

Sophomore Kelly Schmidt led the Lions (21-2, 12-1 in the GSAC)

with a game-high 25 points, while Lisa Faulkner recorded a

double-double with 15 points -- on five three-pointers -- and 16

assists. Rachel Besse just missed a double-double with 13 points and

nine rebounds.

Sophomore Lacey Burns added 11 points and Andrea Jacobson grabbed

seven rebounds for the Lions, who play at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Point

Loma Nazarene University in San Diego.

Mesa wins semi

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team won the

consolation semifinal game of the Bonita Whittier tournament but lost

the championship game Saturday afternoon at Whittier High.

Junior Annie Le scored the game-winning goal with 2:37 remaining

in the game in Mesa’s 9-7 consolation semifinal win over Murrieta

Valley. Le added an insurance goal for the Mustangs (17-9, 4-1 in

league) with 1:52 remaining, while senior Sarah Bowman tallied four

goals in the win.

But Bowman and a Royal player got into a tussle in the

championship game, as both girls were ejected in the first quarter

after punches were thrown. Mesa lost to the Highlanders, 6-1, in the

consolation final, with Bowman scoring the lone Mustangs’ goal before

leaving the game.

Mesa remains second in the Golden West League behind Orange. The

Mustangs host Mater Dei Monday at 3:15 p.m.

Anteaters trump Davis

* TENNIS: The UC Irvine men’s tennis team claimed five of six

singles matches and all three Anteater doubles teams prevailed to

secure a 6-1 victory over visiting UC Davis Saturday.

Seniors Brian Morton and Rye Kashiwabara defeated Michael Chin and

Bastian Bartles, 8-5, in the No. 1 doubles match.

In singles, Morton defeated Michael Chin, 6-3, 6-2, while

Kashiwabara earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jayce Fitch.

Freshman Victor Lamm, junior Peter Surapol and sophomore Mustafa

Ulukan all notched singles victories for the ‘Eaters (2-3), who face

host Pepperdine at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

VU trounces Westmont

* TENNIS: The Vanguard University women’s tennis team opened its

season in surging fashion with an 8-1 victory over visiting Westmont

College.

Singles players Olga Hlushchanka, Amy Brown, Jenny Edner, Alena

Votavova and Olivia Amstad all swept their opponents in two sets,

while all three Vanguard doubles teams (Hlushchanka-Brown,

Edner-Donkervoort, Votavova-Amstad) won.

No. 1 singles player Hlushchanka defeated her opponent, 6-0, 6-2,

and No. 6 singles player Amstad won, 6-2, 6-0.

Sharks cruise to 3-0

* RUGBY: The Back Bay Rugby Football Club scored 34 points within

the first 20 minutes and remained undefeated with a 51-7 victory over visiting Huntington Beach in a Southern California Division I game

Saturday at Peninsula Park in Newport Beach.

The Sharks (3-0) scored nine tries -- a try, worth five points,

occurs when an attacking player grounds the ball in the opponent’s

goal area, similar to a touchdown in football -- and added two

conversion kicks, worth two points apiece.

Eric Andersen scored three tries while Shawn Kalifi added two.

Lawrence Tauasosi, Thomas Alo, Mark Larrea and Nick Dempsey each

added one try for Back Bay, which has a week off before facing host

Riverside at 1 p.m. Feb. 19.

UCI women win

* SWIMMING: The UC Irvine women’s swimming team defeated UC Santa

Barbara 172-90, while the men’s team lost 151-105 Saturday afternoon

in Santa Barbara.

Senior Alexis Sheridan won both the 1000-meter freestyle

(10:23.96) and the 500 free (5:02.94). Sophomore Aubrie Smallwood won

the 100 breast (1:05.05) and the 200 breast (2:18.49). Freshman Chelsea Nagata won both the 100 free (52.65) and the 100 fly (55.49).

On the men’s side, freshman Eddie Erazo broke the UCI record in

the 200 back with his win with a time of 1:49.41. Sophomore Eric

Reilly in the 50 free (21.16) and junior Dreason Barry in the 200 IM

(1:57.59) each won events for the ‘Eaters.

The UCI women finish the year with a dual meet record of 10-3

including a 7-0 record against Big West Conference opponents, the men

finish with a record of 6-5. The ‘Eaters will next compete February

23-26 at the Big West championships at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach.

C al takes UCI

* BASEBALL: Cal Freshman second baseman Josh Satin hit an RBI

single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning

to hand the UC Irvine baseball team a 5-4 nonconference loss Saturday

at Cal.

Satin scored sophomore center fielder Brennan Boesch, who was hit

by Anteater reliever Jimmy Alstot to lead off the 11th. Alstot was able to get the next two outs, but a wild pitch had advanced Boesch

to second. With two outs, Alstot intentionally walked Mike Van Winden

before yielding the game-winning hit to Satin.

Pitcher Justin Cassel started the game for the Anteaters (1-1) and

pitched five innings with seven hits, three runs, one walk and four

strikouts. UCI tied the game, 1-1, with a RBI single by Chad Lundahl

in the top of the second, only to see the Bears (1-2) go ahead, 3-1,

on a two-run single by Matt Einspahr in the bottom of the second.

Coast loses first

* BASEBALL: After starting 3-0 on the season, Orange Coast

College’s baseball team lost its first game with a 5-3 nonconference

defeat at the hands of visiting Chaffey College Saturday afternoon.

Coast’s Steven Johns pitched the first 4 1/3 innings before being

pulled after allowing three runs and six hits through 17 at bats. The

Pirates (3-1) shuffled through four more pitchers, as Justin

Peterson, Daniel Cooper, Josh Gagne and Mark Haderlein all took the

mound before the day was over.

Brian Lamera was credited with the win for Chaffey (1-1), while

Coast’s Josh Gagne was handed the loss. Stephon Schneider hit a

two-run home run for the Pirates, the second time in two days he has

blasted a two-run homer.

Anteaters fall to CSUN

* BASKETBALL: Ofa Tulikihihifo recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds

to lead the Cal State Northridge’s women’s basketball team past UC

Irvine, 68-58, in a Big West Conference contest at the Bren Events

Center Saturday.

Northridge (11-7, 7-4 in the BWC) went on a 20-4 in the second

half to put the game out of reach for the Anteaters (3-16, 2-9).

Melissa Jacob paced UCI with 16 points, including three

three-pointers. Angie Ned added 10 points and a team-high seven

rebounds.

VU loses 6th straight

* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University could not get back on the

winning track against the 18th-ranked Concordia Eagles Saturday in

men’s Golden State Athletic Conference basketball action. The Lions

were defeated, 87-61, for their sixth straight loss, dropping VU’s

overall record to 8-13.

Leon Rosborough popped in a season-high 21 points for the Lions

and added a team-high five assists. Levi Seekins added 14 points and

a team-high seven rebounds, followed by Brian Kim with 13 points.

Vanguard was out-rebounded 42-27 by the Eagles and shot 38% from the

field.

Vanguard is routed

* BASEBALL: The visiting Vanguard baseball team scored three runs

in the second and four in the third but fell to UC San Diego, 20-7,

in a nonconference game Saturday in San Diego.

VU starting pitcher Michael Guernsey started the first inning

allowing no runs, but was bashed for six runs and five hits in the

second inning. Guernsey registered his first loss of the season and

UCSD’s Ryan Leake earned his first win.

Vanguard (2-3) hosts CSU Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
