UCI pounds Bears
Chris Nicoll pitched six innings, allowing no runs and three hits in
the UC Irvine baseball team’s 10-1 season-opening victory Friday at
Cal.
Nicoll (1-0) was credited with the win for the Anteaters (1-0),
while Cal’s Adam Gold (0-1) received the loss after pitching 5 2/3
innings with seven runs and nine hits against him. UCI’s Nash
Robertson had the save.
UCI scored its first run in the top of the first on a Mark Wagner
solo home run, and the Anteaters tacked on two runs in the third, one
in the fourth, three in the sixth, one in the seventh and two in the
ninth.
Wagner finished 2 of 5 with two RBIs, while R.J. Brown, Chad
Lundahl and Brett Dalton also had two hits apiece for UCI. Tim
Stewart added a two-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning and Jaime
Martinez had a two-run single in the fourth and an RBI groundout in
the sixth.
UCI plays today at 1 p.m. in the second of three games at Cal.

Theriot selects UCLA
* FOOTBALL: Newport Harbor High football standout Trevor Theriot
has chosen to walk on at UCLA.
Theriot, who played fullback and linebacker while captaining the
Sailors to the CIF Southern Section Division VI championship game at
Angel Stadium last fall, chose UCLA Friday, over USC and San Jose
State, two other options he was considering.
Theriot, named Division VI Co-Offensive Player of the Year, was
also recently chosen to play in the Shrine game in June, pitting the
best graduated high school seniors from public and private schools
against each other.
Sailors secure second
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High boys basketball team
clinched second place in the Sea View League Friday with a 70-45
victory over host Laguna Hills.
Robert Koon finished with two points and a team-high six steals
for Newport (15-9, 7-2 in league). The Sailors committed 18 steals in
the first half, en route to a school-record 27.
Taylor Young had a team-high 18 points to go with his five steals
and 16 rebounds for the Tars.

Lightning clinch second
* SOCCER: The Sage Hill School boys soccer team clinched second
place in the Academy League with Friday’s 4-1 victory over host St.
Margaret’s.
Braden Ross scored goals 32nd and 40th minutes, with assists
coming from Zack Milder and Richard Gadbois, respectively.
Gadbois opened up the second half with an unassisted goal and
Milder registered his second assist of the game in the 53rd minute
when Tyler Ellis capitalized on a pass.
Goalkeepers Zach Shockley and Jimmy O’Hare teamed for 10 saves for
Sage Hill (6-9-1, 6-2 in league).
Sailors reach semis
* WATER POLO: Senior Ashling Taylor scored five goals and the
Newport Harbor High girls water polo team cruised into the semifinals
of the Irvine Southern California championships with a 12-4 victory
over Carlsbad Friday at El Toro.
The Sailors (22-2), the tournament’s No. 2 seed, burst to an 8-0
halftime lead, well on their way to their fifth straight victory.
Kally Lucas scored three goals while Anne Belden, who tallied five
steals, added two for Newport, which plays Foothill in a semifinal at
11 a.m. today at Irvine High.
Leah Robertson and Katie Kepner added single goals while Kendal
Nelson (four saves) and Elizabeth Nelson (five saves) protected the
goal.

Big first carries OCC
* BASEBALL: The Orange Coast College baseball team scored six runs
in the first inning en route to a 13-2 victory over De Anza Friday in
the Matt O’Brien tournament at OCC.
The Pirates exploded in the first when Stephen Schneider hit a
two-run blast onto Fairview Road. Josh Banda hit an RBI triple and
eventually scored when Gary Gattis hit a two-out single in the first.
Gattis was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3 for 4
with two runs scored and an RBI for OCC (3-0).

UCI sweeps Titans
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team won all nine matches
and only lost one set Friday en route to a 7-0 victory over visiting
Cal State Fullerton.
Anna Bentzer defeated Ruya Inalpulat 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles
match and partnered with Hui Leow to defeat Ma-Ly Tran and Caroline
Freeman 8-5 in the No. doubles match.
Bench sparks OCC win
* BASKETBALL: The Orange Coast College men’s basketball team
defeated host Fullerton 86-73 Friday in an Orange Empire Conference
game.
The Pirate bench outscored Fullerton’s 37-15. Starters Reggie
Brown and Lance Ortiz scored 21 and 20 points, respectively, while
reserves Craig Williams and Matt Davis scored 15 and 17 for OCC
(13-10, 4-6 in conference).
Vanguard splits
* BASEBALL: A wild pitch from reliever John Brose in the 10th
inning allowed Vanguard University shortstop Aaron Barret to score
from third and seal a 1-0 Lions’ victory to split a doubleheader with
visiting Viterbo, Wis., Friday. The Lions fell, 5-3, in the first
game.

UCI sweeps CSN
* SWIMMING: The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming teams each
defeated Cal State Northridge Friday afternoon at Matador Pool in
Northridge. The women won, 121-79, and the men won, 125-73.
The Anteater women were led by senior Alexis Sheridan, who had
wins in both the 200-meter freestyle (1:58.15) and the 500 free
(5:08.40). Abby Zern in the 1000 free (10:34.30), Ashley DePaul in
the 50 free (25.12), Chelsea Nagata in the 200 IM (2:09.00),
Christina Venturacci in the 100 fly (59.26) and Kim Do in the 100
back (1:00.21) were each victorious for UCI as the ‘Eaters had the
fastest times in seven of the nine individual events.
On the men’s side, UCI had seven different men win individual
events. Michael Radford in the 1000 free (10:02.37), Brian Buchanan
in the 200 free (1:44.74), Randall Tom in the 200 IM (1:54.09), Eric
Reilly in the 100 free (47.30), Mike Cohee in the 100 back (52.78),
Kareem Adnan in the 500 free (4:43.74) and Dan Simonsen in the 100
breast (58.28).
CdM finishes Arlington
* WATER POLO: Junior Camille Hewko scored two goals and the Corona
del Mar High girls water polo team handed visiting Arlington a 5-2
loss in the Sea Kings’ third game of pool play in the Irvine Southern
California championships Friday at CdM.
Senior Jordan Anae, sophomore Sarah Hutchison and junior Chelsea
Lyman each added single goals for the Sea Kings.

UCI loses tough battle
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team battled back but
eventually lost 30-18, 30-23, 29-31, 26-30, 20-18 to Cal State
Northridge Friday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at
the Matadome.
Freshman Jon Steller matched his career-high with 22 kills, while
Jayson Jablonsky added 14 kills for UCI (4-8, 2-5). Libero Brandon
Mel had a match-high 11 digs.
Sharks off to 2-0 start
* RUGBY: The Newport Beach-based Back Bay Rugby Football Club is
off to a 2-0 start in the Ganey Cup competition of the Southern
California First Division and have gained three additional United
States Eagles, or national players, to its roster.
The Sharks defeated OMBAC of San Diego, 15-13, last Saturday at
Peninsula Park near the Balboa Pier with newly acquired fullback Eric
Andersen, and center Joe Aleki, scoring tries. Matt Busco added
extras via penalty kick and conversion.
Andersen, along with David Fee and Jacob Waasdorp, join fellow
U.S. Eagles Brian Surgener and Jason Raven on Back Bay, which hosts
Huntington Beach at 1 p.m. today.
Back Bay’s under-19 team is also 2-0 in its first year.

Saddleback clinches 1st
* BASKETBALL: Saddleback High clinched first place in the Golden
West League with a 42-29 road victory over Estancia Friday.
Saddleback’s Mariella McElroy and Linda Lomeli each had 11 points.
The Roadrunners improved to 19-7 overall and 10-1 in league.
Yasmin Arroyo scored eight points for Estancia (3-7, 6-17 in

Northwood tops CdM
* BASKETBALL: Northwood High’s Dan Selway scored a game-high 32
points and the Corona del Mar boys basketball team lost, 65-60, in a
Pacific Coast League game Friday at Northwood.
The Sea Kings (9-16, 4-5 in league) have all but been eliminated
from the postseason, needing a Laguna Beach loss, another Northwood
loss and a win against Laguna to sneak into the third league spot.
Junior Ryan Lance led CdM with 13 points against Northwood (12-12,
4-5) , while Brett Hirata added 11 points. Scott Slaughter chipped in
nine points for the Sea Kings.

CdM falls to T-wolves
* SOCCER: The Corona del Mar High boys soccer team lost 2-0 Friday
at Northwood in a Pacific Coast League game.
The loss drops the Sea Kings to 11-6-3 overall and 6-2-1 in league
and keeps them in second place, where they will mostly likely remain.
Forwards Murphy Megonagal and Ben Maggard lifted the intensity
level for the CdM after the Timberwolves scored 20 minutes into the
first half, but Coach Pat Callaghan said the Sea Kings underestimated
Northwood from the start.
Fullerton tangles Pirates
* BASKETBALL: Fullerton College’s Caricia Jones had a game-high 24
points, along with eight rebounds and nine assists to lead her team
to a 85-60 shellacking of the Orange Coast women’s basketball team
Friday night in Orange Empire Conference play at Fullerton.
Crystal McCormick had a team-high 19 points to lead the Pirates
(15-10, 5-5 in the OEC), while Rhondi Naff had 13 and Lauren
Stepanksi chipped in 12.
