Newport keeps pace

Juniors Amy Klippert scored twice while Stephanie Lambrakis added a
single goal, helping the Newport Harbor High girls soccer team win
its fourth in a row with a 3-1 Sea View League victory over host
Laguna Hills Thursday.
The Sailors (10-5-1, 6-2-1 in league) and Hawks entered halftime
tied at 1, but Klippert scored in the first 10 minutes and Lambrakis
added the final tally in the 70th minute for the winners.
Freshman midfielder Emily Ohlhaver assisted both Klippert goals
while goalkeeper Mary Giberson made five saves in another standout
performance, Newport Coach Phil D’Agostino said.
The Sailors will fight for sole possession of second place in
league when they host Woodbridge at 5 p.m. Feb. 10 to conclude the
regular season.
Aliso Niguel (7-1-1 in league) won its fourth straight Sea View
League title with a 3-1 victory over Irvine Thursday.
CdM opens tourney 1-1
* WATER POLO: Senior Jordan Anae scored seven goals in two games
as the Corona del Mar High girls water polo team went 1-1 in pool
play in their home pool to begin the Irvine Southern California
championships Thursday.
Anae and junior Camille Hewko each scored four times in an 11-1
victory in the first game against Mira Costa. Senior Ashley Hyter,
Cari Levine and Katie Indvik each added a goal while senior
goalkeeper Brittany Fullen made five saves for the fourth-seeded Sea
Kings.
Coronado, however, gained the upper hand against CdM (15-6) in the
second game, scoring three first-quarter goals en route to a 6-4
victory.

Lions pound Viterbo
* BASEBALL: The Vanguard University baseball team pounded 14 hits
and held visiting Viterbo, Wis., scoreless to post a 15-0
nonconference victory Thursday, giving Coach Scott Mallernee his
first victory as the Lions’ leader.
Catcher Mike Grant went 3 for 3 with six RBIs, including his first
home run of the season, while centerfielder Isaac Salazar added three
hits and one run for the Lions (1-1). The game was called in the
bottom of the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Ned scores 28 in win
* BASKETBALL: Guard Angie Ned scored a game-high 28 points on 11
of 23 shooting and the UC Irvine women’s basketball team snapped a
three-game losing streak with a 61-58 Big West Conference victory
against the University of the Pacific Thursday night.
Ned tied her career high with eight rebounds while tallying a
team-leading two blocks. Guard Melissa Jacob added 11 points and
three assists for the Anteaters (3-15, 2-8 in conference), who
trailed, 14-1, to start the contest.
To begin the second half, UCI missed its first seven shots, but
got a turnaround jumper by Ned and a layup after a steal by Kimberly
Martin to take a 39-37 lead with 14:29 to go. The Anteaters would
never give up the lead after that point with the Tigers (5-13, 2-8)
coming only as close as three on a three-pointer by Jessica Brantley
to end the game.

CdM catches up
* BASKETBALL: The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team
chipped away a 12-point Northwood third-quarter lead and defeated the
host Timberwolves, 53-48, in a Pacific Coast League game Thursday.
Junior Katie Schulte had a season-high 26 points to lead the Sea
Kings (12-13, 4-5 in league), who are now tied for fourth place in
league with Northwood (4-5 in league).

Newport wins twice
* WATER POLO: Second-seeded Newport Harbor High rolled through its
first two pool play games of the Irvine Southern California girls
water polo championships Thursday at El Toro.
The Sailors (21-2) downed Capistrano Valley, 9-3, behind three
goals from Anne Belden and two from Ashling Taylor and trounced Dos
Pueblos, 16-3, in the second game.
Kally Lucas, Leah Robertson, Katie Kepner and Danielle Mayer each
scored once against the Cougars as the Sailors, who took third place
in the tournament last season, opened a 7-1 lead after the first
period of Game 1. Lucas added three assists while Kepner led the
Sailors with four steals and teammate Kendal Nelson made five saves
in goal.
Belden scored six times against Dos Pueblos with Robertson, Lucas
and Calli Manderino each adding two goals. Laurel Laidlaw, Bryndis
Klein, Taylor and DeeJay Trobman each tallied single goals with
Nelson making six saves.

Sailors can’t recover
* BASKETBALL: A third-quarter rally wasn’t enough, as the Newport
Harbor High girls basketball team fell to host Laguna Hills, 47-38,
in Sea View League play Thursday.
The Sailors (11-14, 2-7 in league) would have outscored Laguna,
15-5, in the third quarter after being down, 21-12, but the Breakers
hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to make it a 15-8 Newport
third-quarter run.
Senior Vanessa Miller led the Sailors with 11 points and five
assists, while sophomore Jessica Bodkin chipped in eight points and
six rebounds. Brittany Deyan also pulled down six rebounds for
Newport.

Eagles ousted
* SOCCER: The Estancia High girls soccer team rallied in the
second half from a one-goal deficit, but visiting Saddleback poured
in three more goals to earn a 4-0 Golden West League victory
Thursday.
Estancia freshman Taylor Carpenter took a pass from junior Haley
Rosner and kicked it in to tie the score, 1-1, in the second half.
But Saddleback fired in three more goals to clinch the game.
The Eagles (5-7-4, 1-6-3 in league) have two games remaining in
their season, the next being Tuesday at home against Santa Ana at 3
p.m.
Seahawks avenge loss
* BASKETBALL: The Ocean View High boys basketball team avenged a
Jan. 12 loss to Costa Mesa by defeating the visiting Mustangs, 57-43,
Thursday in a Golden West League contest.
Costa Mesa (15-9, 8-2 in league) forced three turnovers in the
third quarter but couldn’t convert them into points, and the Seahawks
went on to outscore Mesa, 20-5, in the quarter.
