Momentum seems to be riding on the side of the Laguna Beach High

girls’ water polo team.

The Breakers ran their win streak to nine games by defeating San

Clemente, Peninsula and University in their last three outings.

On Wednesday , Laguna will host Corona del Mar in a showdown that

will determine the Pacific Coast League championship.

The Sea Kings are ranked No. 1 in CIF-Southern Section Division

II, and Laguna is rated second.

“We’re still refining some things, but I’m really happy with the

way the girls are playing,” Laguna coach Rick McKee said.

Breakers 17, San Clemente 5

Laguna ran its overall record to 18-5 by crushing the visiting

Tritons Tuesday.

Addison Doud and Erin Reid each scored six goals to lead Laguna’s

offense.

Jessica McKee posted a pair of goals and Breanna Duplisea, Kat

Gordon and Allison Wallis each scored once.

Alana Thomson was solid in goal.

“We pulled it all together and played a very solid game,” Rick

McKee said. “San Clemente’s a pretty reputable team, so this is a

nice win.

“We played to tougher than expected teams in University and

Peninsula.”

Breakers 11, Peninsula 10 Eleven months after Peninsula eliminated Laguna in the semifinal

round of the CIF-SS playoffs, the Breakers got even by edging the

visiting Panthers in a tough nonleague match.

Peninsula is ranked fourth in Division II.

The Breakers led, 5-2, after one quarter, and were up just 7-6 at

the half.

They couldn’t shake the Panthers, but they did hold on for the

win.

Doud led Laguna in scoring with five goals, while Duplisea scored

three times.

Gordon contributed two key goals and McKee scored once.

“Even though Addison is our ‘go to’ offensive player, our scoring

is much more balanced as we head into next week’s big showdown with

Corona Del Mar,” Rick McKee said. “We are taking the rest of this

week to prepare for that game and CIF.”

Breakers 12, University 7 Host University surprised Laguna by taking an early 3-0 first

quarter lead, but the Breakers rebounded and went on to their third

Pacific Coast League victory.

“This was a tough game for us as we came out flat and had to fight

to gain momentum,” McKee said.

Reid, a freshman, triggered that momentum.

She hit an outside shot late in the first quarter that started the

Breakers on a 5-0 run that eventually put them up, 5-3, at the half.

From that point on, Laguna controlled the match against the

Trojans, who are ranked sixth in Division II.

Doud once again provided much of the offense with six goals.

Reid finished with three goals and Duplisea, Wallis and McKee each

had one.
