Yoshiyama named Ocean View coach

Dean Yoshiyama has been named the new head football coach at Ocean

View High, the school has announced.

Yoshiyama, a Huntington Beach resident and graduate of Marina

High, replaces Harold Eggers and Vern Vandersluis, who had served as

co-head coaches at Ocean View the past two years.

A graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Yoshiyama returned to Surf City to

teach at Marine View Middle School. He then went on to teach and

coach football, basketball and golf at his alma mater, Marina.

In a statement, Yoshiyama said that teaching youngsters how to

become winners in life is his top priority.

“Success can’t always be measured in wins and losses,” he said.

“Guiding young people to develop poise, confidence and self-pride, as

well as giving that little extra, are the real objectives.”

Karen Gilden, principal at Ocean View, embraced Yoshiyama’s

hiring.

“We think that coach Yoshiyama will prove to be an excellent

addition to the coaching staff at Ocean View,” she said. “He is a man

of character, focused on building on solid program, and always ready

to work hard to make it happen.”
