Newport upsets Wolverines
The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team sent visiting Aliso Niguel,
ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division I, to its first loss
of the season with a 2-1 Sea View League victory Thursday.
Krystal Wright gave the Sailors (7-4-1, 4-2-1 in league) a 1-0
lead in the 30th minute when she beat the keeper with a low shot into
the corner. The Wolverines (6-1 in league) answered four minutes
later and the score remained that way until the 78th minute, when
Newport junior midfielder Stephanie Lambrakis chipped the
game-winning goal into the upper-right corner.
Mary Giberson made all six of her saves in the second half as the
Wolverines fired several shots.
But the Sailors’ defense, led by senior sweeper Erin Hardy, used
an effective trapping scheme that neutralized Wolverine attacks and
caused numerous offsides calls, Newport Coach Phil D’Agostino said.
The Sailors, whom D’Agostino said sit by themselves in second
place in league, face the team chasing them, Irvine, in an away game
at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
