Edison edges Marina

Mike Sciacca

Two days after losing a tough road showdown at Los Alamitos High, the

Edison boys’ basketball team returned home to get the best of Marina.

Just barely.

The Chargers, who were coming off a 53-52 setback to Los Alamitos

in a game for first-place in the Sunset League race, had enough to

slip past Marina, 48-46.

Three Chargers -- Thomas Marcin, Tim Golden and Jeff Golden --

scored 11 points each.

The Golden brothers each connected on three, three-point baskets.

Matt Molino of the Vikings scored 22 points to lead all scorers.

In the loss at Los Alamitos, a game in which Edison led by five at

the half, T.J. Lipold scored a game-high 21 points and Marcin scored

18.

Huntington Beach split its two recent Sunset League games, winning

at Fountain Valley, 62-57, before falling at home to Esperanza,

70-41.

In the five-point win over the Barons, Huntington battled back

from an eight-point halftime deficit.

Matt Buckalew’s 28 points led all scorers.

Against Esperanza, Huntington found itself in a 41-14 hole by the half.

The Oilers trailed by as many as 35 points (62-27), early in the

fourth quarter.

Buckalew scored 11 points and Brandon O’Bryan scored 10 for the

Oilers.

In another boys’ Sunset League game, Esperanza rallied in the

second half to slip past host Marina, 59-57.

In Golden West League play, Ocean View pounded visiting Santa Ana,

77-45. Clint Amberry scored 14 points and Brad Sweezy added 11 more

to lead the Seahawks.

Ocean View earlier had drilled host Westminster, 67-27, in another

league game. Sweezy scored 15 points and Amberry had 14.

In girls’ basketball, Marina slowed down Edison, 39-28, in Sunset

League play.

Rachael Maulit led the Lady Vikings with 11 points.

Edison’s leading scorer, Rebecca Kepilino, managed to score a

game-high 18 points.

The Chargers scored just three points in the fourth quarter.

Huntington Beach was defeated by host Esperanza, 58-25. Jasmine

Erving led the Oilers with 14 points.

In wrestling, the Sunset League match between Edison and Marina

was decided in the final match, where Edison sophomore Nick Abraham

pinned his opponent at 140-pounds to give the Chargers a 39-30

victory.

Abraham pinned the Vikings’ Chris Gialketsis at 1:33 of the first

period to keep Edison undefeated.

“I had a feeling the match was coming down to me as I watched it

go along,” Abraham said. “It was close all the way and our 130

pounder, Dylan Jensen, our captain, was out sick, and Marina picked

up six points there.

“When Brandon Drucker’s match at 135 ended, I knew it was my turn

to pick up the team. I needed to stay focused and not make mistakes.

We have some really talented wrestlers on our team who have picked me

up in some tournaments where I struggled so it was my turn.”

Marina had won two matches in overtime, one by two points, and

another, by pin, to set up the decisive match.

Joe Hirsch (125) and Jimmy Hynes (160) registered pins for Edison,

and Drucker won by decision.

“When the match was over the overwhelming feeling was relief that

we had won,” Abraham said. “We would really like to go undefeated in

the Sunset League duals and win the Sunset League tournament. To do

that, everyone will have to step up at some point. This was my

opportunity.”

Edison will attempt to keep its record unblemished tonight when it

wrestles at Los Alamitos.

The Chargers face undefeated Esperanza on Feb. 3.

In boys’ soccer, Huntington Beach scored a 1-0 home upset of

Sunset League rival Esperanza when junior Chris Sauter scored in the

second half.

Edison was a 2-0 winner over Marina, as seniors Matt Blank and Tim

Hacker scored goals.

Sophomore Dane Kaylor got the shutout on two saves.

In girls’ soccer, Edison shut down Marina, 3-0, in a Sunset League

match.

Elysse Kirmaci celebrated her birthday by scoring Edison’s first

goal, which came off a cross from sophomore Corie McGuire, after one

of several corner kicks that teammate Kaitlin Thulin had in the

match.

Junior keeper Amanda Shay recorded three first-half saves.

In a physical second half that resulted in three yellow cards and

several fouls, Edison sweeper Nicole Lawrence scored on a

perfectly-placed 35-yard free kick and in the 65th minute of the

match, Thulin’s corner kick went to wing player Brenna Boies, who

took the pass and scored Edison’s final goal.

Edison’s freshman keeper, Cassie Becker, recorded two saves in the

second half.

Edison also tied Los Alamitos, 1-1. The Chargers countered a goal

by the Griffins’ Erin Bay with a second-half header for a score by

Kirmaci, which came off a Thulin corner kick.
