Barrett tallies hat trick

Brandon Barrett scored three goals and a staunch defense did the rest

to keep the Corona del Mar High boys soccer team undefeated in the

Pacific Coast League while earning a fourth straight victory with a

3-1 triumph over visiting rival Northwood Wednesday.

Grant Almquist, Brian Burke and Paul Kenezevic provided the

assists while goalkeeper Andrew Dialynias made eight saves for CdM

(8-4-2, 3-0 in league).

Josh Briggs scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute for

Northwood (8-7-2, 2-2), which prevented the Sea Kings, who led, 1-0,

at halftime, from tallying their second straight shutout.

Barrett chipped the ball over the Northwood goalkeeper’s head to

up the lead to 2-0 on a pass from Burke in the 65th minute and went

left post after taking a pass from Kenezevic to score his third in

the 76th minute. The Sea Kings, defending league champions and CIF

Southern Section Division II semifinalists a year ago, have outscored

their last two foes, 7-1.

CdM Coach Pat Callaghan praised the defense of Shane Collins and

David Del Fante.

Callaghan said the team’s defense has been especially good of

late, helping contribute to the current winning streak.
