Sailors sizzle in second

The Newport Harbor High girls soccer team pulled away from a 2-1
halftime lead and scored three unanswered goals in the second half en
route to a 5-2 victory over visiting Laguna Hills in Sea View League
play Tuesday.
Five different players scored goals for the Sailors (6-4-1, 2-1-1
in league), while goalie Mary Giberson had eight saves.
Jackie Clark, Amanda Laz, Emily Ohlhaver, Krystal Wright and
Stephanie Lambrakis scored a goal apiece, while Taylor Giacamoro and
Wright each tallied a save.
Newport visits Woodbridge Thursday at 5 p.m.
Eagles pound Pacifica
* WATER POLO: Chelsea Kaplan, Courtney Hess and Meagan Kunert all
scored four goals to help Estancia High’s girls water polo team forge
an 18-8 nonleague victory over visiting Pacifica Tuesday.
The Eagles (9-7, 1-1 in the Golden West League) scored six goals
in both the second and fourth quarters. Melissa Buchmann added a hat
trick while goalkeeper Katie Mahan made 12 saves for Estancia, which
faces league foe Westminster at 3:15 p.m. today at Huntington Beach
High.

Duo tabbed MVPs
* FIELD HOCKEY: Jenny Taylor was named the Sunset League Most
Valuable Player and Ciara Lawrence was named Most Valuable Goalkeeper
for the Newport Harbor High girls field hockey team, two of eight
Sailors honored by the league.
Joining the two seniors as first-team all-league selections are
seniors Reese Simmons and Lyndsi Foster as well as juniors Sasha
Grumman and Jackie Taylor.
Senior Amanda Fallon and junior Ashton Reif were second-team
all-league.
Newport Harbor finished 18-4-5, Sunset League champions for the
second consecutive season and second in the Tournament of Champions.
Waves crash UCI
* TENNIS: The UC Irvine women’s tennis team lost to Pepperdine,
4-3, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu Tuesday.
The Waves swept the three doubles matches to win the doubles point
for a 1-0 lead. The two teams would split the six singles matches for
the Pepperdine victory. Junior Izabela Mijic upset Caroline Raba in
the No. 2 slot, 6-4, 3-6, (10-7). Freshman Inna Agababian defeated
Eva Dickes, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 5 singles slot. Senior Kristina Boss
picked up UCI’s third win in singles at the No. 6 slot, 4-6, 6-2,
over Lise Sissler.
The Anteaters fall to 0-1 on the year and will travel to Eugene,
Ore. where they will face Utah Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and Oregon
Sunday at 10 a.m.
Streak is snapped
* SOCCER: A six-game winning streak was snapped Tuesday as the
Corona del Mar High girls soccer team fell to visiting Northwood,
2-1, in Pacific Coast League action.
Junior Jessica Mazura scored the long goal for the Sea Kings (8-8,
3-1 in league) in the 57th minute to tie the game at 1. But Northwood used a last-minute effort and scored in the 78th minute for the win.
CdM hosts Laguna Beach at 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Seekins Lion of Week
* BASKETBALL: Vanguard University junior men’s basketball forward
Levi Seekins has been named Lion of the Week by the school’s sports
information department.
The 6-foot-6 Seekins averaged 14 points over a four-game span from
Jan. 6 to Jan. 15, more than triple his career scoring average. He
also grabbed eight or more rebounds in each of those four games.
Seekins had a season-high nine rebounds and 14 points in a Jan. 4
loss to Concordia, ranked No. 1 in the NAIA at the time.
Two days later he raised his career-high to 17 points on
near-perfect 8-of-9 shooting in Vanguard’s 82-67 win over Point Loma
Nazarene.
He had eight rebounds in a Jan.8 loss to The Master’s, then
establishing another career-high with 22 points in a loss at Westmont
Jan. 12.
Seekins made 9 of 11 field-goal attempts against Westmont and also
produced eight boards and four assists.
Heading into Thursday’s clash with Cal Baptist, he was sooting
78.6% from the field (44 of 55) and was averaging 8.2 points per
game.
Ninja Gumbys No. 1
* SOCCER: The AYSO Region 57 girls under-14 Corona del Mar Ninja
Gumbys completed a sweep through the Area 11-Q championship tournament and won the championship game in mid December, while
outscoring their opponents, 8-1, in five games.
The defense was led by Amy Youngman in goal, with help from
defenders Taylor Rhodes, Alix Condon, Arrianna Condon and Beth
Arnenson.
The mid field was dominated by Valerie Avila, Sophie Molinari,
Amanda Jacoby, Courtney Davison and Walker Moore, while the offense
was led by MacKenzie Jones (six goals), Breezy Brewster and Jordan
Team.
Rhodes also converted a key penalty kick to propel CdM into the
semifinals.
The team is coached by Scott Jones.
