A relevant contribution by ‘Irrelevant’ group

JIM DE BOOM

Paul Salata’s Irrelevant Week committee donated $10,000 this past week to Costa Mesa United efforts to build a 50-meter swimming pool

at Costa Mesa High School and a 2,500-seat football stadium at

Estancia High School.

Part of the funds were raised by the Commodores Club of the

Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, who hosted the welcoming reception

and press conference at the Newport Dunes resort for Andre

Sommersell, 2004’s Mr. Irrelevant. Sommersell, an outside linebacker

from Colorado State, was taken 255th overall by the Oakland Raiders.

“This contribution is a neighbor helping neighboring schools to

get state of the art facilities that most other cities and schools

have had for a long time,” Salata said. “We need more neighbors to

step up and make relevant contributions to support the $7.25 million

goal and the kids of Costa Mesa.”

fundraising chairman Gordon Bowley at (714) 546-0072.

A THANK YOU FROM BAGHDAD

Newport Beach Sunrise Rotary Club President Fay Bosler read the

following thank-you note Tuesday’s meeting: “On behalf of all the

staff at Freedom Rest, I would like to thank you for your generosity.

The soldiers have been helped enormously by the donations you all

have sent. Thanksgiving was yesterday and we served more than 400 of

our brave men and women. They are so wonderful, funny and courageous.

They battle on through the hardest of conditions with smiles and

jokes and a camaraderie that is uplifting. You helped them with all

the sundries and snacks and by simply remembering them. They loved

it! As did we. Thanks is simply not enough. We wish you a happy

holiday season from your friends in Baghdad! Ms. Kimberly Welch”

ABOUT SOROPTIMISTS

Founded 50 years ago, Soroptimist International of Newport Harbor

is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas.

Internationally, there are 100,000 Soroptimists in 119 countries

and territories, who contribute time and financial support to

community-based projects benefiting women and girls.

Locally, the Newport Harbor club is partnering with Girls Inc. of

Orange County and Stop-Gap Interactive Theater in producing

“Lifelines 4 Girls,” an innovative domestic violence prevention

program for young teen girls. The club also supports Interval House,

the Orange County Interfaith Shelter, the Susan G. Komen Race for the

Cure and the Soroptimist International of the Americas Women’s

Opportunity Awards.

women, call club President Diane Ashe at (949) 631-7213.

ANGEL HAIR: PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF UFOs?

The non-profit, education-focused Mutual UFO Network of Orange

County invites you to hear specialist Brian Boldman, who will present

data from the National Archives, showing that appearances of a white

substance called “angel hair” falling from the sky correlate with UFO

reports.

Decades ago, author Charles Fort covered this among other things

that fell from the sky, long before airplanes. The meeting is

Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Community Center, 1845 Park Ave. There is

a nominal charge of $12, unless you are a first-timer. Newcomers pay

only $5.

The group provides an outlet to hear about things you don’t read

in the papers or see on TV, member Bob Wood said.

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for Today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “There are only two ways to live your

life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though

everything is a miracle.”
