Hoag’s McIntyre dies

Andrew Edwards

Newport Beach businessman and philanthropist Bob McIntyre, a longtime

board member with Hoag Hospital, died Sunday of lung cancer. He was

81.

“He was wonderful,” his wife, Marilyn McIntyre, said. “He was such

a good husband and father, and a fabulous grandfather.”

McIntyre started his career with the Southern California Gas Co.

in the 1950s as a salesman, his wife said.

In 1980, he became the utility company’s president and served as

chairman and chief executive from 1985 to 1989.

In a statement, Debbie Reed, the Gas Co.’s president and chief

executive, called McIntyre “one of the finest people I’ve ever

known.”

Reed, who worked for McIntyre’s executive team, said business was

only one part of his life.

McIntyre served on Hoag Hospital’s board of directors from 1982 to

1998 and was on the hospital foundation’s board from 1988 to 1992,

Hoag spokeswoman Debra Legan said.

The Hoag Hospital Foundation raised about $23 million toward

construction of the Hoag Cancer Center during McIntyre’s tenure.

“He’ll be missed by everyone at the hospital who knew him,” Legan

said.

McIntyre also served on the board for the Orange County Performing

Arts Center and attended morning meetings for both organizations on

his way to work in Los Angeles, his wife said.

In 1984, McIntyre was president of the Los Angeles Chamber of

Commerce as well as a member of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing

Committee.

The president of that committee, Peter Ueberroth said in a

statement that Bob McIntyre helped the Gas Co. become a major player

in the community during his time at the energy firm.

In a release, Antonia Hernandez, former president of the Mexican

American Legal Defense Fund, and Stewart Kwoh, executive director of

the Asian Pacific American Legal Center both credited Bob McIntyre

with reaching out to their communities.

McIntyre is survived by his wife Marilyn; daughter Julie Crouch;

son-in-law Chuck Crouch, and grandchildren Gray and Emily Crouch.

Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Andrew’s

Presbyterian Church, 600 St. Andrews Road, Newport Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the

Hoag Hospital Foundation, 1 Hoag Drive, Newport Beach, 92658-6100.
