Mesa handles Ocean View

A 17-0 run to start the game helped the Costa Mesa High boys
basketball team beat visiting Ocean View, 70-63, in a Golden West
League showdown Wednesday night.
Ocean View answered the opening surge with 15-4 run of their own,
but the Mustangs were able to regroup after the first quarter and
answer the seven-time defending league champs bucket for bucket the
rest of the game to earn their fourth straight win.
Junior Brian Molina scored a career-high 25 points with five
three-pointers to lead Mesa (10-7, 4-0 in league). Scott Knox scored
21 for the Mustangs, the third game in a row the guard has reached
the 20-point plateau, all league victories.
Ocean View (8-8, 1-2), which hadn’t lost to a league opponent
since 1998, has now lost two straight after falling to Estancia
Monday. Costa Mesa travels to Orange Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Eagles crush Lions
* BASKETBALL: Senior Carlos Pinto had a game-high 26 points along
with 13 rebounds to lead the Estancia High boys basketball team past
host Westminster, 60-27, in Golden West League action Wednesday.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 13-4, 3-0 in league and are
vying for first place with Costa Mesa, who improved to 4-0 in league
after Wednesday’s win over Ocean View. The two teams go head-to-head
Jan. 21 at Estancia.
Estancia jumped out early on Westminster Wednesday, taking a 15-5
first-quarter lead. Jose Molina, Michael McDaniels and Ray Verrette
double-teamed and pressured the Lions in the fourth quarter, holding
Westminster to just three points.

Wolverines snarl Tars
* BASKETBALL: Playing without senior Alex Orth, who was sidelined
due to an illness, the Newport Harbor High boys basketball team lost
to host Aliso Niguel, 75-61, in Sea View League play Wednesday.
Senior Brett Perrine had a game-high 25 points for the Sailors
(9-8, 1-1 in league) and Taylor Young added 14.
Aliso’s Michael Roll, who has committed to UCLA, put up 18 points
for the Wolverines (16-3, 2-0).
