Seven Sailor wrestlers pin opponent

Seven Newport Harbor High wrestlers pinned their opponent in the
Sailors’ 51-24 nonleague win over visiting Orange Tuesday night.
In the heavyweight class, Jonathon Szecsei won by forfeit for
Newport Harbor (4-4, 0-1 in league), while Eddie Charcas (119)
decisioned Luis Colon, 12-7.
Kyle Molina (130), Craig Nordstrom (135), Michael Bates (140),
Josh Smith (145), Jessee Marshall (152), Guillermo Perez (171) and
Brian Bedaudette (215) all pinned their opponents for the Sailors.
Sage earns first victory
* SOCCER: The conditions weren’t ideal, but the Sage Hill School
boys soccer team used the muddy field at Brethren Christian to their
advantage in an 8-2 Academy League victory Tuesday.
The Lightning secured their first win of the season (1-7-1, 1-1 in
league) with hat tricks by Braden Ross and Zach Milder. Tyler Ross
also added two goals for Sage, who play host to Academy League rival
St. Margaret’s Friday at 3:25 p.m.
Goalkeepers Zach Shockley and Jimmy O’Hare combined for 11 saves
for the Lightning.
Vanguard continues roll
* BASKETBALL: Five different players scored in double digits as
the Vanguard University women’s basketball team rolled to a 93-78
Golden State Athletic Conference victory over host Westmont Tuesday
in Santa Barbara.
Kelly Schmidt led the Lions (15-1, 6-0 in conference) with 24
points, while Lisa Faulkner (19), Rachel Besse (16), Lacey Mills (14)
and Andrea Jacobson (10) all heavily contributed to Vanguard’s sixth
straight conference victory.
Lightning streaking
* SOCCER: Freshman Kellee Kim racked up four goals and the Sage
Hill School girls soccer team cruised to a 12th consecutive victory,
defeating visiting Brethren Christian, 4-0, Tuesday in Pacific Coast
League action.
The Lightning (12-0, 2-0 in league) are off to their best season
in school history under fifth-year Coach Amy Ray. But the biggest
test will come Friday, as Sage visits St. Margaret’s at 3:15 p.m. in
a league showdown.
Against Brethren Tuesday, Kim’s first goal was unassisted, and the
other three were assisted by Sara Montazami, Claire Josephson and
Colleen Heyler.
Early hole sinks Sage
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School boys basketball team dug itself
an early hole it was not able to climb out of in a 56-48 Academy
League loss to host Brethren Christian Tuesday.
The Lightning were down, 13-5, after the first quarter to Brethren
Christian, the No. 3 ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division
IV-A. Sage Coach Steve Keith said the Warriors possessed superior
team speed, which resulted in 20 Lightning turnovers.
Matt Loper scored a game-high 17 points, followed by Jamie McGee’s
15 for Sage Hill (14-4, 1-1 in league). Byron Jefferson scored a
team-high 15 points for Brethren Christian (14-2, 2-0).

Brethren tops Lightning
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team held an
18-16 halftime lead, but lost, 46-36, to host Brethren Christian in
Academy League action Tuesday.
Brethren Christian took a 29-28 advantage after the third quarter
and surged ahead in the fourth by converting free throws when the
Lighting were forced to foul.
Sage Hill (5-7, 1-1 in league) was led by center Haywood Wright’s
19 points. The Warriors (12-6, 2-0) were paced by junior guard Niki
Wakaniya’s game-high 25 points and four three-pointers.

Uni defeats Sea Kings
* BASKETBALL: Junior Katie Schulte put up 24 points, including
four three-pointers, in the Corona del Mar High girls basketball
team’s 66-57 Pacific Coast League loss to host University Tuesday
night.
The Sea Kings (8-10, 0-2 in league), playing from behind the whole
time, narrowed the score on a couple of occasions, but University
continued to pull away.
Megan Benbow added 12 points and Allison Long chipped in eight for
the Sea Kings, who play at Calvary Chapel Thursday at 7 p.m.

Newport stumbles
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team was
held scoreless in the second quarter and went on to lose to host
Aliso Niguel, 72-44, in Sea View League play Tuesday night.
Aliso Niguel scored 17 points to Newport’s zero in the second
quarter, as the Sailors (9-9, 0-2 in league) lost their second
straight league game.
Sophomore Jessica Bodkin led Newport with nine points and six
rebounds, while sophomore Brittany Deyan had two points and six
rebounds.
Sophomore Ivy Melo added eight points for the Sailors, who visit
Irvine Thursday at 7 p.m. in another league matchup.
