Parada headed for China

Former UC Irvine men’s basketball standout Adam Parada has left the
Utah Snowbears of the American Basketball Association to sign with a
professional team in China, a team spokesman said Friday.
Parada, a 7-foot center who was cut by the Sacramento Kings during
training camp this season, ranks first in UCI career annals in
blocked shots (149), third in rebounds (775) and eighth in points
(1,320). The two-time second-team All-Big West Conference performer
completed his career in the 2003-04 season.
He helped Utah to a 15-0 start, playing his final game for the
Salt Lake City-based franchise Dec. 31.
Parada averaged 13.4 points, fourth best on the team, and led the
Snowbears (now 16-0) in rebounds per game (6.8) and field-goal
percentage (76 of 134 for 57%).

Lightning open big
* BASKETBALL: The Sage Hill School girls basketball team overcame
the three-point shooting of host Oxford Academy and won, 64-34,
Friday in an Academy League opener.
Five different players all hit three-point shots for Oxford, but
Sage (5-6, 1-0 in league) was able to hold the Patriots to a combined
eight points in the second and third quarters.
Junior Haywood Wright led the Lightning with 21 points, 18
rebounds and eight blocks, while senior Katie Puishys had 19 points
and 18 rebounds. Laura Schaefer and Vicky Gutierrez each had five
assists for Sage.

Sage Hill still perfect
* SOCCER: Freshman Kellee Kim and senior Amy Werblin both tallied
two goals to lead the Sage Hill School girls soccer team over host
Oxford Academy, 5-0, Friday in Academy League action, adding an
eleventh win to an already perfect season for the Lightning.
Sophomore Kara Percival scored the other goal for Sage (11-0, 1-0
in league) while sophomore Ali McLaughlin, Kim, Werblin and sophomore
Emily Webb all had an assist.
Laura Gordon had 11 saves in goal.
Mesa holds signups
* BASEBALL: The Costa Mesa Pony League will hold signups for the
spring 2005 season Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Costa Mesa High.

Sea Kings earn win
* BASKETBALL: Corona del Mar High’s boys basketball team survived
a last-second shot by visiting Tesoro and opened Pacific Coast League
play with a 54-53 win.
Senior Ted Slaughter hit a layup with just seconds remaining to
give the Sea Kings (6-9, 1-0 in league) a three-point lead. Tesoro
then quickly scored, got the ball back and fired the buzzer-beater,
but it was missed.
Slaughter finished with 16 points to lead CdM while senior Brett
Hirata had 15 points, including four three-point shots.
The Sea Kings host Estancia today at 5:45 p.m. in a nonleague
matchup.

Mesa rolls past Saints
* BASKETBALL: Junior Tony Krikorian poured in a career-high 23
points while Scott Knox tallied 20 points as the Costa Mesa High boys
basketball team remained unbeaten in Golden West League play with an
88-50 victory over host Santa Ana Friday night.
Jeff Waldron scored 13 while senior Brit Wase tallied seven points
for Mesa (8-7, 2-0 in league), which jumped to a 25-9 lead after one
quarter. The Mustangs connected on 11 three-pointers, including five
by Krikorian.
Santa Ana fell to 6-9, 0-2.
Mesa hosts league foe Saddleback at 7 p.m. Monday.

CdM takes one of two
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High girls water polo team
defeated Coronado, 8-2, and lost to Santa Margarita, 5-3, in the
Santa Barbara tournament Friday at Santa Barbara High.
Against Coronado, Camille Hewko led the Sea Kings with three
goals, one assist and a pair of steals, while Katie Indvik added two
goals.
Chelsea Lyman, Kaitlin Kubas and Jordan Anae added one goal apiece
for CdM.
Anae had two goals and Indvik had the third against Santa
Margarita, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division I.
Pirates dismantle Dons
* BASKETBALL: Orange Coast College sophomore Rhondi Naff scored a
game-high 23 points to lead the Pirates to a 79-38 Orange Empire
Conference women’s basketball triumph over visiting Santa Ana Friday.
Naff, a Costa Mesa High product bound for Cal State Bakersfield,
was 9 of 13 from the field and 5 of 5 from the foul line to help OCC
improve to 12-5, 2-0 in conference.
Lauren Stepanski had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Christen
D’Alessandro chipped in 11 points and five steals for the winners.
Santa Ana fell to 3-7, 0-2.
Dons edge OCC in OT
* BASKETBALL: Visiting Santa Ana College posted a 75-72 overtime
victory over Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference men’s
basketball game Friday.
Lance Ortiz led four Pirates in double figures with 19 points,
while teammate Reggie Brown chipped in 16 points and a team-high nine
rebounds.
OCC fell to 8-7, 0-2 in conference.
Terrence Hundley paced the Dons (5-8, 1-1) with 21 points, while
former Newport Harbor High standout Nedim Pajevic, a sophomore
forward, had nine points and eight boards.
Santa Ana led, 27-26, at halftime, but OCC tied it at 65 to force
the extra session.
