Tree collection service offered through mid-January

Rainbow Disposal plans to hold its annual recycling of Christmas

trees from Monday through Jan. 14 to coincide with regular trash

service at no extra cost.

The trees will be recycled into mulch. Rainbow officials ask that

customers remove ornaments, hooks, light strings, tinsel and stands

and place the tree with household trash on the regular collection

day. The maximum height is 6 feet. Trees that are taller than 6 feet

must be cut into sections.

Huntington Beach residents who use the blue bin “dumpster” service

should place their trees beside the trash bins for collection. Do not

place trees in the bin.

Trash pickup during the holidays will remain unchanged, and

Rainbow plans to continue pickup on Friday, Christmas Eve and the

following Friday, New Year’s Eve. The facility will be closed for

public dumping at 4 p.m. on both Fridays, and will resume normal

business hours the following week.

Project Self Sufficiency gets record donation

Huntington Beach nonprofit Project Self Sufficiency has received

its largest private donation of the holiday season. Realtor Sue

Saffarrons recently donated $20,000 to the charity group that

provides support for needy families including subsidized housing,

social services and educational assistance.

Saffarrons said she was a single mom for 13 years and recently

joined the nonprofit’s foundation. She made a personal commitment to

donate a sizable amount from her business and use a percentage of her

real estate commissions to save enough to make the donation.

Project Self Sufficiency also enjoyed a charity Christmas party

last week hosted by the Huntington Beach Fire Department,

Soroptimists International and Women of Action, which helped host the

party and provide snacks. The Girl Scouts and National Charity League

provided toys from its gift drive.
