Hole 10 -- Shady Canyon Golf Club

Par 4, 338 yards

A slight dogleg right that requires a tee shot to clear Shady

Canyon Creek, which dissects the fairway less than 200 yards from the

white tees. The fairway feeds to the right side and is roughly 50

yards at its widest point. Large Sycamore trees bordering both the

left and right narrow the entrance for approach shots to a somewhat

elevated green. Pin position is key on this hole. The hole turns more

difficult if the flag is placed on the green’s left side, where

slopes and bunkers border perilously close to the putting surface.

The green’s elevation makes running the ball onto the putting surface

a difficult task.

Hole 11 -- Pelican Hill Golf Club (Ocean North)

Par 4, 302 yards

A postcard-esque hole that offers yet another view of the Pacific

Ocean -- if it’s a clear day -- for golfers standing on the tee. This

begins a two-hole stretch of ocean real estate. The hole is

relatively straight and wide, so it offers tempting decisions. In a

calm or prevailing wind, the longer hitter can drive this short hole.

The fairway’s right side is bordered by two sand traps -- one a

bunker -- 30 yards apart. Bunkers front right and back left border

the green. Long approaches here make par very difficult as the green

and its surroundings are extremely undulated.

Hole 12 -- Pelican Hill Golf Club (Ocean South)

Par 3, 146 yards

This one might top all 36 holes at Pelican for scenery. The golfer

must concentrate while waves from the Pacific Ocean rustle in the

distance. Joggers and cyclists traverse a trail less than 100 yards

from the hole’s left side. The hole features beautiful rock

outcroppings to the left front and back of the green, along with a

bunker that runs virtually the entire length of the left side. Six

different tee boxes allow for plenty of variety anytime one steps

onto the tee. The oblong-shaped green is long and runs at an angle

from right to left. There can be a four-club differential required

for the tee shot depending on flag location. A bunker pinches the

green’s right side. Don’t be short on this one.

Hole 13 -- Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club (Los Lagos)

Par 4, 355 yards

One of the straightest and generous driving holes on the entire

course, but it’s appearances can fool the eye. The green is one of

the toughest on either Los Lagos or Mesa Linda courses, said Sean

Collins, a teaching professional at the club. Slice too far off the

tee and one might leave a daunting second shot under, around, or over

a large eucalyptus tree. Heavy rough sometimes two inches long guards

the left side. Any shot hitting the middle or front portion of the

putting surface has a good chance of rolling back into the fairway.
