Edison wrestlers take second
In a tournament that attracted some of the state’s top programs,
Edison High finished second at its own event, the Beach Bash, which
was won by California’s second-ranked team, Bakersfield.
Medal winners for the Chargers included Dylan Jensen (130), Jimmy
Hynes (160) and Romni Fuga (275). Second-place finishes went to
Garrett Drucker (119-pounds), Brandon Drucker (135) and Blake Allison
(152). Jake Pinkham (189) finished fourth, Nick Abraham (140)
finished sixth, and Stephon Holmquist finished eighth.
Each weight class had 32 wrestlers.
The strong field of competitors represented teams such as
Bakersfield, Ayala, Esperanza, North Torrance and Laguna Hills.
Edison, which is off to its best start in school history, will be
in Las Vegas this weekend to compete in tournament action
Edison had gotten its season off to an impressive start by
sweeping its opponents in the Sunset vs. Century dual meet between
the two leagues.
The Chargers’ swept included wins over Century schools Villa Park
(53-19), El Dorado (42-30), El Modena (36-35) and Brea Olinda
(50-18).
Going undefeated for the Chargers were Pinkham (four first-period
pins), Fuga (four pins, including one in 11 seconds), Garrett
Drucker, Brandon Drucker, Jensen and Blake Allison.
Abraham, Jimmy Hinds, Joe Hirsch, and Preston Masters each had
multiple victories with at least one pin.
Edison also finished second at the 38-team El Dorado Tournament
that was won by Poway, the top-ranked team in the state and rated
sixth, nationally.
In boys’ basketball, Edison continued play in the Aztec Classic at
La Quinta High with a 53-32 pounding of Corona del Mar.
Kevin Reed’s 14 points led all scorers, and the Chargers also
received 12 points from T.J. Lipold.
It was the second win Edison has recorded over Corona del Mar this
season -- the Chargers defeated the Sea Kings in the season opener
for both teams on Nov. 30.
In earlier classic action, Edison drubbed Saddleback, 48-26.
Lipold’s 20 points paved the way on offense.
Also at the Aztec Classic, Huntington was upended by Aliso Niguel,
52-22.
In pool play at the Fullerton Tournament, Marina defeated
Pacifica, 65-54. Matt Molino scored 16 points to lead the Vikings.
The Vikings ended the tournament with a 65-62 win over Cal Hi.
Molino again led Marina, this time with a game-high 29 points and 14
assists.
Jeff Delaunay contributed 15 points and Mike Kinoshita scored 10
for the Vikings.
Host Ocean View held on to defeat JSerra, 62-61, in pool play at
the Tournament of Champions. Clint Amberry led all scorers with 25
points and Seahawks teammates John Greiner and Brad Sweezy scored 17
and 10 points, respectively.
The Seahawks, however, were defeated by Clovis West, 60-49, in
semifinal round action.
Guard Diego Delgado led Ocean View with 14 points.
J.Serra went on to win the tournament title by upsetting defending
CIF-Southern Section Division I-AA champion Long Beach Poly in
overtime, 72-63.
In girls’ basketball, Edison held off visiting Don Lugo in a tight
nonleague contest, 44-43.
Rebecca Kepilino led the team with 21 points and sister Wahine
Kepilino scored 11.
In pool play at the Duarte Tournament, Savanna handed Ocean View a
39-33 setback. Senior guard Vanessa Alderfer’s 13 points topped the
Seahawks.
Ocean View bounced back to rout Colton, 70-29. D.J. Butler led
Ocean View with 20 points and Erica Congelliere added 10 points.
In boys’ soccer, Edison blanked Estancia, 2-0, and also shut out
Lakewood, 4-0.
Huntington was a 3-0 nonleague winner over University.
In girls’ water polo, Huntington defeated Sunset League rival
Edison, 10-8, in consolation round action at the Villa Park Classic.
