Noteworthy: Needed two extra holes to win the 80 and older
division of the Santa Ana Country Club senior match play championship
last month. Friend Duke Madden caught fire on the back nine -- he
trailed Bonas by four strokes at one stage during the front nine --
and forced a tie with a chip-in par on 18 to tie Bonas. Both players
made par on the first playoff hole, the par-5 first. Bonas won when
he sank a putt for par on the par-3 second. “I couldn’t get the ball
on the tee,” quipped Bonas about his anxiety. “I always get nervous
when I am in a tournament, but I enjoy it and I will keep doing it.”
Bonas won his age division in the same event 10 years ago ...
