Local scholar appointed to stem cell committee
Oswald Steward, director of UC Irvine’s Reeve-Irvine Research
Center for Spinal Cord Injury, has been named to the citizens’
committee that will oversee the California Institute for Regenerative
Medicine.
The institute was created by the passage of Proposition 71 to
administer funds for stem cell research projects.
Steward, 56, of Laguna Beach, is also a professor of anatomy and
neurobiology at UCI. He is known for research on how genes influence
nerve cell growth and function and other nerve research, and he has
chaired a National Institutes of Health neurobiology review group and
held other leadership posts in the medical field.
